24 June 2002 - Shamrocks remained in second place in both senior divisions with wins in the Queensland Gaelic Football League over the weekend. Brisbane's western suburbs club beat East Celts in the senior mens to remain just one win behind John Mitchels in the senior mens. Ronan O'Mahoney scored his first goal in the top flight for Shamrocks, with Matt Walsh kicking two points to be the leading scorers. Best on field for Shamrocks included goal keeper Glenn Carpenter, full back David Shakovskoy and Walsh in the mid field. Shamrocks also beat East Celts in the ladies division, however conceded a team record six goals in doing so. The team in green won by six points, 6-11-29 to 6-5-23. Despite closing to within a point in the second half, Shamrocks mens
reserves missed the chance to move into second place after losing to
Easts by five points, 1-2-5 to 0-10-10. Shamrocks play John Mitchels on Sunday in a top-of-the-table clash in the senior mens division. Related links: Taytoman Connor stars for Ireland at the World Cup
Walshe received enormous coverage by in the Irish newspaper when he was the first Ireland supporter into Korea for Ireland's second round match against Spain. There was front page story, another on page one, and a full colour photo on the back main sports page. "We had budgeted for the first four games, but we think we may be able to afford to last a bit longer with the travelling Green Army," Walshe is quoted as saying.
Walshe stepped into the limelight for Shamrocks last year by paying what may have been a world-record price for a packet of Taytos (see starting photo), followed by winning the Inaugural International Shield with Shamrocks, and then representing Queensland in Gaelic football at the Australasian Gaelic Games in Melbourne. When in Brisbane he is still a key contributor and a media darling for Shamrocks. Related links: Walshe pays world-record price
The Shamrocks full back scored the first goal of her career after almost 60 games spanning four seasons.
In three previous seasons, Humphrys has represented Queensland at two Australasian Games, won three Brisbane Shields, one GAA Trophy, and the Queensland ladies championship last year. She is the current Shamrocks ladies best and fairest award winner, and previously won the most improved award. Shamrocks play East Celts in all grades at Willawong this Sunday. scoring record
Kennedy kicked 9 points to eclipse the club record
8 points originally set three years by Irishman Dennis Cronin from
County Kerry. Shamrocks scored 1-13-16 and held the reigning
champions Souths scoreless in an outstanding performance. Last year Kennedy represented Queensland at the
Australasian Gaelic Games in his first season of Gaelic football, and
has now surpassed some famous names to claim his first Shamrocks
record. The single game scoring record was originally set
by Cronin in 1999, and equalled in 2000 by Adrian Darbellay, who
subsequently left to serve in East Timor, and All-Ireland winner Eoin
Mulligan from County Tyrone. The 2000 season was when Shamrocks last won the
senior mens Queensland Championship, ironically beating Souths in the
final. On the weekend against Souths, Kennedy was best on
ground for Shamrocks, followed by Dave OMalley from County Meath in
Ireland, and Scott Ingram who returned to his regular position in
defence. In the ladies match, Shamrocks conceded three
goals in the first half against Souths, and were unable to bridge the
gap, going down 3-7-16 to 1-8-11. Patty Preece was best for Shamrocks, supported by
Hannah Humphreys and Kate McNichol. World Cup champions Angie Doyle 1-1
and Louise ONeill 0-5. Related links: |
