Shamrocks reflect at O'Hanlon's after Shield final
Brad Kennedy's shot at goal in the final minutes hit the crossbar, and a goal by Keegan McCarthy was disallowed after a cross rebounded off the post but he was ruled to have entered the goal square early. These were a couple of the chances that could have stolen the year's first trophy for the underdog Shamrocks. Brisbane's western suburbs team edged to within a solitary point at half time, but could not take their chances as John Mitchels ran out winners by five points, 1-7-10 to 1-12-15. It was the John Mitchels' first Brisbane Shield title for five years. The result was a significant improvement for Shamrocks over the 19-point drubbing they received the last time the teams met, positioning them well for a run at the Queensland championship that they last won in 2000. John Mitchels move into the outright lead in the Queensland league as a result of the win, and Shamrocks are now second. The Shamrocks defence was outstanding in the game, led by reigning club best-and-fairest David Shakovskoy at full back, and Queensland representative goal keeper Glenn Carpenter. Raymond Concar, recently returned from County Roscommon in Ireland, was regularly creating opportunities from half forward to also be amongst the best. Kennedy led the scoring with three points. Shamrocks gained some honour against John Mitchels on the weekend, by winning both the ladies and reserve mens matches against them. Shamrocks ladies had three more scoring shots and prevailed by one point 2-11-17 to 3-7-16 and move into equal second in the league standings. In the reserve mens competition, Shamrocks beat the Brisbane Shield reserves champions by two points, 1-11-14 to 1-9-12, to move into a four-way tie for second place. Related links:
The midfielder scored 1 goal 3 points over the weekend as Shamrocks beat Sarsfields by 14 points - 4-10-22 to 1-5-8 - to remain undefeated in the Queensland League competition. Walsh's personal tally of 3-7 in five matches the season already exceeds his total from the whole of last year, when he went on to represent Queensland at the Australasian Games for the second time at the senior level. His team, Brisbane's western suburbs Shamrocks, now face strong favourites John Mitchels at Willawong on Sunday - to the victor goes the Brisbane Shield, and also the undisputed lead in the Queensland League competition. Shamrocks have won the Brisbane Shield three times in the past four years, including a defeat of John Mitchels in last year's final. However, John Mitchels belted the team in green by 19 points when they last met. David Shakovskoy and Matthew Ireland were amongst the best on ground for Shamrocks over the weekend, so their good form should help make the final an entertaining one. In the reserves competition over the weekend, Shamrocks rallied after trailing by as much as 10 points in the first half, to eventually go down 4-4-20 to 4-8-24 against reigning Queensland reserves champions Harps in a very competitive match. Andrew Buchanan was best for Shamrocks with 1 goal 2 points at centre half forward, with John Collins outstanding at full back. This season may be in doubt for Australasian all-star Renee Moynihan after she left the field in the ladies match with a recurrence of a knee injury. She is Shamrocks' second-leading scorer this season with 5 goals 13 points, and the holder of two team scoring records. Shamrocks ladies lost to Harps in their first league encounter since Shamrocks' famous victory last season to secure the Queensland Championship.
