Brisbane Shield will separate the leaders 20 May 2002 - The Brisbane Shield and the outright lead in the Queensland Gaelic Football League will be decided this weekend when John Mitchels and Shamrocks play-off for the first senior trophy of the Queensland season. John Mitchels won
their sixth consecutive match this year, and second straight in the
League competition, when they overpowered reigning Queensland champions
Souths by 12 points over the weekend 1-12-15 to 0-3-3. Meanwhile, Shamrocks warmed
up for the Brisbane Shield final with a 14-point win over Sarsfields to
improve to 2-0 and equal with John Mitchels in the league 4-10-22
to 1-5-8. Matt Walsh continued his
outstanding form with 1 goal 3 points. His total of 3-7 in five games
already exceeds his score from the whole of last year, when he went
onto represent Queensland at the Australasian Games for the second time
at senior level. Shamrocks have won the
Brisbane Shield three times in four years, including a win over John
Mitchels last year, however John Mitchels should start favourites
because they belted Shamrocks by 19 points the last time the two teams
met. In another senior match this
weekend, the winner between East Celts and Souths will move into
outright third position when one of them records its first victory of
the League season. In the reserves competition
last weekend, John Mitchels became the fourth different club in four
years to win the reserves shield when they beat Souths 4-11-23 to
0-6-6. Ironically, neither of those teams are the pacemakers in that competition, with Harps leading with a 2-0 win-loss record and East Celts 1-0. Harps sustained a strong fight back by Shamrocks over the weekend to win 4-8-24to 4-4-20. In the ladies competition,
Harps remained the only undefeated team with a big win over reigning
Queensland champions Shamrocks over the weekend. Harps play Souths in the final of the Brisbane Shield next week. John Mitchels have carved a swathe through the preliminary round to be undefeated in the Brisbane Shield competition, and now appear favourites to defend their senior mens Queensland League title. Irish midfielder Adrian Rosney and defender Enda Cotter, who recently transferred north from Sydney, have John Mitchels playing outstanding football with an average winning margin of almost 23 points per game in Brisbane Shield matches. Paul Fitzpatrick, the 18-year-old and youngest member of the famous John Mitchels' Fitzpatrick family, is also an outstanding prospect. This was highlighted over the weekend with a stunning goal from 15 metres in their 36-point win over East Celts. However, John Mitchels have to beat defending Brisbane Shield champions Shamrocks to claim the opening trophy of the year. That final is expected to be played as part of the new league season in a couple of weeks time. Shamrocks have their own
outstanding contributors now running into form, including former
Queensland rookie of the year Matthew Ireland, recently returned from
the outback for just his second year of football, and Matt Walsh of the
famous Shamrocks Walsh family. In Australias only mens
reserves competition and one of most even in the country, Souths look
set to play either Harps, or new entrants to the reserves competition
John Mitchels, in the Brisbane Shield final in coming weeks. In the ladies competition,
talented Queensland championship holders Shamrocks are still finding
form as three other clubs vie for early favouritism. Defending Brisbane Shield
champions Harps are undefeated in the pre-league competition, with
Souths and John Mitchels competing to be Shield final opponents this
weekend. Second-year player Ronnie
Browning has Harps motoring in the midfield, while Tertia Dex and
Louise Kelly regularly amongst the best across the field. For Souths it is a story of the re-emergence of experienced players such as Melissa Lee, while John Mitchels are benefiting from the natural improvement of younger players such as Christine Rice. Related links: PREVIOUS QUEENSLAND NEWS |
