| Each week is carefully planned out. I pull things from a couple different preschool programs. We usually follow a weekly theme and incorporate the activites that relate to that idea. A new letter is worked on for recognition each week along with numbers. The kids also learn to read sight words, as you will read about further down. One of the preschool programs I use is called Pre-K,Day by Day. This one has a lot of really neat activities and focuses on a specific theme for the day. Examples would be letters, honesty, self esteem, early math skills, etc. It's a fun program with a lot to offer. Another program I use is called Toddler Tutor. This one goes over everything from pre-writing skills to reading to science and math. It's got everything. So the kids are busy, but not overloaded. I also use a program called Rapid Reader. This is a reading program that you can start with younger children because it does not use any phonics. It's all sight words. The children decorate a book cover of their choice and each week we add a page to their book. A new and short sight word sentence is introduced each week. One sentence might be: 'I see the furry cat.' Throughout the week we review these words in different ways and by the end of the week the children recognize and read the sentence. It's a neat program and I have used it on kids as young as 2-1/2 and they can do it! Later, when they really have a better concept of reading words, phonics can be introduced and they will be very sucessful. Of course I have tons of other resource books to choose from to give the kids variety and new things to learn. Reading is a big part of our day. The children have reading time before nap and I read to them several times a day. |
