Area 51

"About 190km north west of Las Vegas, in the Nevada desert, the offical map stops. There is plenty there - roads, creeks, mountains, bunkers, buildings and a massive 9.5 km runway - but on paper these things do not exist. It is as if all human activity has ceased across an area the size of Switzerland."

Public access to this zone is forbidden. 'Use of deadly force authorized', warn the signs. Its airspace is the most sacred in the US. This is Nellis Air Force Range and Nuclear Test Site, more commonly known as Area 51 (a name given for one section of the base on old government maps).

Alien Technology

Founded in 1954 as a secret base in which the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation could develop spyplanes for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Area 51 is still home to some of the US's most futuristic projects. The Stealth bomber was tested here, along with other unconventional aircraft. It has always been shrouded in secrecy - the US Air Force (USAF) only admitted its existence in 1994 - because it represents the cutting edge of US military technology. The only trouble, according to recent controversial evidence, is that the technology is not American. Nor are the technicians. Both are from outer space.

Ever since Area 51 was established, people have reported odd-looking objects in the sky above it. These claims were rubished by authorities. But denial turned to embarassement when one of their own men alleged that not only were there UFOs above Area 51, but the USAF was actively working with alien technology.

Robert 'Bob' Lazar, a contract scientist who worked on the base for five months from december 1988, broke the news on television in May 1989. He revealed that the US government was investigating nine flying saucers and was trying to adapt alien technology to its own ends. He was filmed in shadow, using the alias 'Dennis', and his voice was electronically distorted. Lazar claimed both he and his wife had recieved death threats. The secrecy did him little good. After the interview the death threats increased and his car was shot at.

In November, to forestall further interference, he came into the open. This time Lazar described the top-secret 'S4' site, next to Papoose Lake within Area 51, where the alien craft were stored. He revealed how he had been employedin a team of 22 engineers to figure out how the crafts propulsion system operated.

Inside S4

According to Lazar, S4 was an underground complex which occupied a whole mountain range. At first he thought he was working with highly advanced man-made technology. But when he entered one of the discs, he became convinced it was from another world because its form and dimensions did not appear to be man-made.

"It has no physical seams, no welds or bolts or rivets," Lazar said. "Everything has a soft, round edge to it... as if it's made out of wax and then heated for a time and then cooled off."

There were portholes, arches and tiny chairs only a foot or so off the ground. Its propulsion unit was a baseball-sized object, which radiated an anti-gravity field through a hollow column that ran vertically through the center of the craft.

The briefing papers that Lazar read confirmed his suspicions. They included an astonishing mass of UFO information, among which were pictures of autopsies of little grey beings with large hairless heads. They stated that these aliens were from from the Zeta Reticuli star system. They also mentioned an incident in 1979 in which the aliens had killed security guards and scientists at the base. All this left Lazar in no doubt that he was working with an "alien craft, produced by an alien intelligence with alien materials."

Lazar does not categorically say he saw aliens in S4. But he saw something odd. Passing a room, he glimpsed two men in white lab coats "looking down and talking to someting small with long arms... I only caught a glimpse. But I don't know what on earth that was,"Lazar said.

The Zeta Reticuli Connection

In 1963, Barney and Betty Hill, a respectable couple from New Hampshire, USA, sought pyschiatric help after suffering from insomania and nightmares for two years. Hypnosis sessions revealed that the Hills had been abducted by aliens on 19 September 1961 and that they had been subjected to medical experiments.
Betty Hill also spoke of the origin of the aliens. Although it would not be discovered until 1969, Betty described exactly the Zeta Reticuli star system, estimated to be 37 light years away from our world. Bob Lazar says Zeta Reticuli is mentioned in a briefing paper as the source of the craft he worked on.

Area51 - Evidence

Death on the Base

In 1987 Robert Frost came home from working in Area 51, screaming with pain and fear. Two years later he was dead, one of several workers affected by mysterious chemical fires at Groom Lake.
The victems are currently suing for damages. Even though the case has forced the USAF to admit to the existence of Area 51, they have refused to take responsibility for the injuries and deaths. Is there a connection between these highly toxic fires and the persistent rumours of an alien presence on the base? Many are begining to wonder.
