Welcome Thee To My Home

At Faire
You can call me Mel, but at the Sterling Renaissance Festival, I'm called Katya Vasha Splinterovich. Normally you can find me at "Splinter's Corners", down in the lower shire at Middle Earth Pottery, or working at Mardigan's Maile. If you don't see me, listen for the sound of singing and violin music. You'll find me eventually.

Aside from visiting the boothies and spending lots of money, some of my favourite things to do include see the shows (Shakespeare and the Comedia del Teatro del Art are always a good choice), play with the cast and playtrons, and listen to some great music. A great band to see at Sterling is Empty Hats, (formerly Double Indemnity). A great place to spend lots of money is at K.J. Craftworks Hairstick Booth. Kathleen is an amazing woodworker, and she's a great person, and her art is amazing! (So what if I'm getting so many pairs of hairsticks I'm helping fund her kids college funds. The point is they make fantastic hairsticks!)

If listening to music isn't your thing but you love laughter, definitely see Don Juan & Miguel. If that doesn't tickle your funny bone you're either dead or you're hungry. Either way, go see the Giant Chickens. Not only are they funny, they're delicious. ::wicked grin:: Boba DaVinci's show is also a must see, even if Opera isn't your thing. If none of these ideas work for you, just check out the schedule . I'm sure you'll find something to amuse and entertain.

Between 2 and 4 every day, we Splinters (Splinter History to be posted soon!) usually take a siesta of sorts. We catch the breeze down on the footbridge while Cousin Leo tortures people at the Archery booth. Occasionally I can even be coaxed (or bribed) into singing or playing my violin.

Towards the end of the day, definitely go to the pub sing. Maybe I'm biased, but our Pub Sing is one of the best on the East Coast.

At Work
Something else that takes up a faire amount of my time is my job. I work at my alma mater, Ithaca College in the Department of Experiential Learning. My time is split between the OT/PT Clinic and the Wellness Clinic in the new Center for Health Sciences building.

And, what exactly do I do at these clinics, I hear you cry? Well, I'm the assistant assistant/office manager for both areas. That means I pretty much do everything ::grin:: The other cool thing about this job is that it's a nine-month position! Yup, it means I basically have my summers off! This is my first summer here, so we'll see how that works out.

Fun stuff
So, I bet you're wondering, "What does Mel do in her spare time when she's not working at IC or shilling and gallavanting at faire?" Well, I'm glad you asked! When I'm done trying to tidy up my house, I like to spend my time either reading, gardening, crocheting, writing poetry, updating my journal, hanging out with friends, watching movies, listening to and making music, and even a faire bit of gaming. Yup, I'm a female roleplayer. A rare breed, I know. ::grin::

If you like gaming, then here are some fun places to visit:

Wizards of the Coast (always a fun place to visit)
The Wyrd
Battle Me! (OK, so my Battle Imp is a bit of a wusse, he's still kinda cute!)
Dungeons and Dragons (an old standby, and the new D20 system is quite a bit of fun!)
Orphyte (Some old favourites; Chill, TimeMaster, and more!)
Iron Crown Games (ah, Rolemaster and Spacemaster. Two of the three greatest games I used to play in college.)

Fuzzy Creatures
Ah, yes, I neglected to mention my other past-time, taking care of my small brood of cats. At one point I was kept by thirteen furries, but I'm down to five now. No, that wasn't a typo. I was once owned by a plethora of kitties. A bakers dozen of whiskers and paws. A venerable coven of cats. While I miss the ones that aren't with me anymore, my five seem to be pretty happy. Here is a page with some pictures of the furries (past and present).

For those interested, here is a list of all the furries, in the order the original thirteen came into my home:

Being a bit of a social butterfly, I do have a faire number of friends. My friends, or as I prefer to call them, my Chosen Family, are quite widespread. I've got friends in New York, New Hampshire, Texas, Wisconson, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, Memphis, California, New Jersey, Indiana, Colorado, California, and even as wide spread as England and Russia. Here is a page with pictures of some of my chosen family as well as pictures of me and my relatives.
