| Belladonna/Deadly Nightshade Belladonna, or deadly nightshade, is a perennial hard. It usually reaches hights of about 50-200 cm, and is found mainly in Europe and Asia. Now, you'd think that people would stay away from this plant if it's so poisonous. But no. People are stupid. In fact, ladies would often use it in a distilled water solution to dialate their pupils. It's also been used to treat pain due to rheumatism, gout, and neuralgia, and for asthma, whooping cough, and other resparatory conditions. You might think that, with all these old remedies, the plant isn't really all that bad. So why, then, do they call it deadly nightshade? Well, let's take a look at when happens when you swallow too much of it: First, your pulse starts to race. Then your mouth gets dry, you can't swallow, your head begins to ache, and your skin feels dry and hot. Your vision blurrs, you hallucinate, have convulsions, and very often end up falling into a coma or dying. Sounds loverly, doesn't it? Back |
