I realize that Bernice included many birthdates in her information, but I will not include any dates for those that I do not have a death date for. Times have changed since the 1970's and this is the Internet afterall! Please email me personally for any dates that appeared in the book or the newsletters. This newsletter is the first one for the new editor, Paul Jorgensen. It includes an introduction to Paul; Publicity that they are trying to create; letters; and other interesting notes.
Introduction to the new editor
Paul Francis Jorgensen was born 17 September 1919 on the farm of his Shackelton grandparents at Mora, Minnesota. He is the son of Joseph Walter Jorgensen and Mary Lucile Shackelton. The Jorgensen family left the farm in 1923 and settled in Chicago, Ill. Paul graduated from Steinmetz High School in 1937. He married Betty May Degen, the daughter of Howard Alexander Degen, Sr. and Margaret Mabel Ebertsch. Paul and Betty have one daughter, Barbara Jean who married John Henry Kisslan, Jr. Barbara and John have four children. In 1941, after four years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army Field Artillery and in 1942 entered Aviation Cadet pilot training. After receiving his pilot wings and commission as a 2nd Lt. in March 1943, he ws assigned to P-38 fighter aircraft transition at Glendale, Calif. Later in 1943 and early 1944, he was a P-38 fighter pilot in North Africa and Italy. During the invasion of Italy at Salerno, he was in the first flight of aircraft to land on the beach. During his fifty combat missions he was credited with destroying three German ME-109 aircraft and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with ten oak leaf clusters. After World War II, as a civilian, he was a B-26 bomber pilot with the Calif. Air National Guard. In 1948 he graduated from SOuth western University of Los Angeles with a B.S. Degree in Accounting. Recalled to active duty with the AF in late 1948, Paul piloted C-54 transport aircraft in 1949 on the Berlin Airlift; and in 1952-1953, during the Korean War, he was stationed in Japan flying C-47 and C-54 aircraft. In 1979, after nine years of active duty and thirty-three years in the Reserve and Air National Guard, Paul retired from the USAF in the grade of Lt. Colonel.
