Shackelton, Horace, Jr., Mrs. Ida Shackelton, Mrs. Ethel Jones and her daughter, Esther Jones. SECOND DIVISION-SIXTH SECTION (pp 155-156) xiii. George Eugene Shackelton, the thirteen child of Robert Shackelton and the fist son of Jane Ann Schuyler, a relative of General George Schuler of Revolutionary fame. George was b. 25 December 1851 in Waverly, New York (La Salle county history gives Oswego, New York). His mother died when he was 2 years old, probably while giving birth to a second child. She was buried in the cemetery at Waverly, New York beside Robert's first wife. George Shackelton came with his father to Ancona, Illinois in 1856. His father hauled coal from what was then called Scrabble Hill, now the city of Streator. He continued in the business until 1866, and was often accompanied by his son, George. Removing to Cornell where he spent the latter years, passing away in 1875. Many of the warly settlers remember Robert Shackleton in this business capacity, for he did his hauling with three teams, tying one behind the other. Mr. Goodenough says a large shaft stone in Ancona, Illinois marks his grave. He also says that he is buried besides his last two wives; Ellen Mason Shackelton and Susan Lamphier Shackelton. George Eugene Shackelton became a pioneer Merchant in Ransom in 1876. he established the first store in town, at the age of 27. The store sold general merchandise. On the 23rd of April 1877 he was untited in marriage to Mary E. Jones, who was born in New Hamphire on 6 January 1852, a daughter of Lyman and Adaline M. (Spaulding) Jones. Her father started in the year of 1853 with his family to Illinois by the way of the lakes to Chicago and then across to the county of Libertyville. In 1855 he removed to Brookfield township, La Salle county. The family resided on a farm while the father acted as land agent for the canal company. Following the death of Mr. Jones at the age of thirty-five years, his wife and daughter Mary removed to Marseilles. The mother died in 1898 at seventy-nine years of age. Mary E. died 1 July 1915 in Boulder, Colorado and is buried there. George Eugene died 1 January 1917 in Portis, Osborne County, Kansas and is also buried there. Children of George Eugene Shackelton and Mary E. Jones: i. Ethel A. Shackelton, b. 26 October 1890 in Ransom, La Salle County, Illinois; m. Earl McCann (son of David J. McCann and Elizabeth Cleal) on 10 February 1915; b. 29 January 1890 in Ransom, La Salle County, Illinois; d. 8 October 1942 in Streator, Illinois; Earl farmed near Ransom and also sold Life Insurance; one son, David Glenn a. David Glenn McCann, b. Private; m. Dolores Benckendorf (daughter of Fred Benckendorf and Bertha Newman); b. Private; 5 children, Barbara, Rosemary, Carol, Ruth and Larry.
