Abraham Shackleton Obituary On Sunday morning, July 26, 1891, at the home of his son, Benjaman, four miles south of Pine Village, Abraham Shackleotn died at the advanced age of 74 years, eight months and 27 days. The deceased was born in Yorkshire, England, Oct. 29, 1816, and came to the United States in 1842, where he engaged in farming and wool combing in New York and Massachusetts. He afterwards moved to Butler Co., Ohio, and from there in 1857, settled in Warren county, Adams township, where he has since resided. He was married Sept. 30, 1849, to Mary E. Wallace, of Maryland, which union was blessed with six children, five of whom are still living. In politics he was a Democrat and was a man of unusual intellectual ability. Although his early education was acquired only from Sunday school, he had greatly added to this by the careful reading and observation of years. He was a noble hearted, companionable man, honest in business, industrious in his habits and a kind and loving father. His loss will be keenly felt not only by his family but by the community in which he lived so long. For seven years his health has been gradually failing and during the past week, though quite feeble, was not thought to be in immediate danger, until Saturday, when he began sinking rapidly and passed away peacefully. During his illness he had often expressed himself as ready and waiting to go to his last long home. To the large concourse of friends who assembled at the residence a funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Kemp and then the body of our departed friend was taken to the Quaker cemetery and placed in the grave to await the glorious morn of the resurection. |
