Letter to the cousins
Dear Cousin:

Mrs. Benice Shackelton of Pittsburg, Kansas, the author of the book "The Shackletons" published in 1972, and the editor of the "Shackleton Newsletter" for the past ten years, has decided to relenquish her role as editor and publisher of the newsletter. Bernice has asked me to take on the job and I have accepted. My wife Betty has volunteered to help and together we wil give it our best efforts. This will not be an easy task to follow Bernice's successful ten years, but with your help we hope to continue her efforts.

Some of you already know us but for those who don't, Paul is the son of Mary Lucille Shackelton Jorgensen. She was the daughter of Oscar Ellsworth Shackelton who desceded from Jacob Wintermute Shackelton, John Ogden Shackleton, Benjamin Shackleton, and Richard Shackleton, the Emigrator of our family line. (For further infomration regarding Paul's family see the "Shackleton Newsletter, Volume 1, No. 19, October 1978)

Now, what are the plans for the future of the Shackelton-Shackleton Newsletter and family history?

First, we plan to continue Bernice's publication of letters received from members. Emphasis will be placed on those letters which provide information about "people things", i.e. births, deaths, marriages and other important happenings and family history. Entire letter may not be published but interesting portions will be extracted.

Second, we are convinced that knowledge of your ancestoral past is a positive factor and a common bond in relating to other family members, no matter what the distance is between the numerous family branches. Therefore, on occasion the newsletter will contain articles which take a backward look at our family history.

And finally, family research should continue. The search for the connection between the American Branch and the Englis and Irish Branches should be pursued. Efforts should be made to determine the date and place of arrival in America of Richard Shackleton, the Emigrator. In addition, we will be looking for descendents of the Emigrator who until now have not been identified.

These plans are ambitious and can only be accomplished with your help. you can help by providing us with information about your branch of the family and the names and addresses of those soursins who might like to get involved and recwive the Shackelton-Shackleton Newsletter. While we welcome letters and information from all members, we are particularly awaiting news from descendents of Frances Lenora Shackelton and Richmond Grant White; and descendents of Edna Della Shackelton and Earl Guy Whipple.

We plan to publish the Newletter quarterly beginning with July 1984, and after that in October, January, and April. We will publish a membership roster annually listing the names and addresses of all members. There will be no charge for being a member and having your name on the roster. However, in order to receive the Newsletter there will be a subscription price of $5.00 per year for the four issures.

Please let us know if you desire to become a member, or if you are prsently a member, if you wish to continue. Also, let us know if you wish to receive the newsletter. If you do wish to receive the Newsletter it is not necessary to send money now, but we do have to know if you wish to subscribe so we know how many copies to print.

In closing, please excuse this "form" letter but is is being sent to over seventy "cousins" and a personal letter from us to each one would not be possible at this time.
