Excerpts from the obituary of Dr. J. G. Shackelton that appeared in the Monmouth Inquirer Thursday, April 5, 1883

Dr. J. G. Shackelton
"the most prominent physician of Matawan, died at his residence, on Sunday night, at 10 o'clock. Three weeks before he was confined to the house with nervous prostration, induced from overwork; afterward typhoid fever made its appearance, which combined with his already wearkened condition, cause his death.

Dr. J. G. Shackelton was, for over twenty-five years, a practicing physician of Matawan. During the greater part of his sickness he was unconscious from delirium, consequent upon, or, at least attending his illness, which facts adds to the sorrow experienced by all on account of his sudden death. His system was much exhausted, owing to his extensive practice, giving him no time to recuperate, and his decotion to his profession and its contstantly increasing duties, may be said to have made him a martyr thereto. During his whole sickness, of about three weeks, the entire community made inquiries with apparently anxious forebodings, and showed by their faces the feeling within their hearts. He was a man that had many friends. . .

Dr. Shackelton was born in Belvidere, June 16, 1836, and was therefore in the 47th year of his age. He was the son of Benjamin and Elanor Shackelton, who with one brother and two sisters, are still living. He studied medicine with Dr. Byington, of Belvidere, and Dr. Reeves, of Jersey City, and came to Matawan in 1857, immediately after graduating from New York Medical University, and began a practice that increased to the close of his life. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and his voice was heard, when the duties of his profession would allow in the choir of that or of the Presbyterian Church, which his family regularly attended.

He was married October 26, 1864, to Cordelis M., daughter of the late Joseph Rose, of Matawan. For ten or twelve years he had charge of Washington Hall Drug Store, which he pruchased from William Spader, and subsequently sold to Mr. Samuel Lockwood. He served in the Civil War.

Those who enjoyed the magnificent entertainment at Long Branch, last July, given in celebration of his twenty-fifth anniversary in practice, little expected the life so wholly given for others, would be so soon rudely torn asunder.

He leaves an affectionate wife and two young daughters, Fannie and Addie. His father, mother, a brother and two sisters survive him.

He had long been a member of the Monmouth County Medical Society, at one time acting as its president, who were invited to the funeral, which took place from the Presbyterian Church, Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock."
