In 1971, the University Computer
Centre was established with the installation of an IBM
1130 computing system. The teaching of Computer
Science was started from the session 1971-72 with the
introduction of one year Post Graduate Diploma in
Computer Science (PGDCS) with an intake of ten
students. Two years later, i.e., from the session
1973-74, one year professional course called Diploma
In Electronic Data Processing and Machines Operation (EDP)
was started. Since its inception followed by the
creation of the Department of Computer Science, we
have been continuously engaged in producing well
trained and quality IT professionals. In addition to
this we are associated with the process of
computerization of various departments and offices and
spreading computer awareness and IT culture among
teachers, research scholars, students and staffs of
the University as well as various business sectors
such as Banking, Insurance etc. A chronicle of
activities of the department are given below:
-
1971: The first successful
attempt in the direction of computerization in AMU
started with the creation of Computer Centre as a
central facility for the AMU followed by
installation of IBM-1130 in Computer Centre.
With the aim of producing trained
manpower which could suffice the ever increasing
demand of skilled professionals, Diploma in
Electronic Data Processing (EDP) - a one year
professional course was started.
-
1972-73: The teaching of
Computer Science was started from the session
1973-74 with the introduction of a one year PG
Diploma in Computer Science (PGDCS) with an intake
of 10 students.
-
1980: One of the first in
India, VAX-11/780 - a mainframe system, purchased
from DEC (USA), was installed in the Computer
Centre, AMU.
All these activities helped in
providing impetus to the process of computerization
of various units of university administration. To
name a few, the computerization of the Registrar's
office, office of Controller of Admissions and
Exams, Halls of Residence are prominent one.
-
1982: In the summer of
1982, University Grants Commission's (UGC) standing
committee visited the Computer Centre and it
recommended and approved two new courses, a three
year Master in Computer Science and Applications
(MCA) and a one year Post B.Sc. Diploma in Computer
Science and Applications (PDCA) in place of earlier
PGDCS course, along with the faculty positions,
technical staff and initial grants. These courses
were started from the session 1983-84 with an intake
20 students in each course initially, which was
subsequently raised to full sanction strength of 30
in each.
With the increase in Computer
awareness and installation of computing systems in
various organization in the country and elsewhere,
the need of more IT professionals, well versed in
programming, was realized and to cater this need
various Postgraduate, Undergraduate and Diploma
level courses in Computer Science and Information
Technology, like MCA, B. Tech in Computer
Engineering, B.Sc. (Hons.) in Information Technology
(BIT), B.Sc. (Hons.) in Computer Applications (BCA),
B.Sc. (Hons.) in Computer Maintenance (BCM), P.G.
Diploma in Computer Programming (PGDCP), Diploma in
Computer Application (DCA), etc., were started from
time to time.
Apart from these regular courses,
short-term skill-oriented courses are conducted by
Computer Centre for existing staffs of the
university with an aim to train them to use
software, which in turn helps in expediting the
process of automation of various units of the
university.
-
1989: Department of
computer science was created and started functioning
as a separate unit since 1st Jan, 1989.
Presently the Department of
Computer Science is conducting the following courses:
M.C.A.
(Master in Computer Science and Applications)
P.D.C.A. (Post B.Sc. Diploma in Computer Science and
Applications)
B.C.A. (B.Sc. in Computer Applications)
B.I.T. (B.Sc. in Information Technology)
B.C.M. (B.Sc. in Computer Maintenance)
In addition to above mentioned
courses, the Department is also running the following
professional courses:
P.G.D.C.P.
(Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Programming)
P.G.E.D.P. (Diploma in Electronic Data Processing &
Machine Operation)
