Our women's team is part of the hugely successful San Francisco Golden
Gate Rugby Football Club which also fields Div 1 and Div 2 men's sides,
a super-league side and a High school Boys side. We
are competitive, train hard and our goal is to win and have a great
time in the process. It's this work hard, play hard attitude that makes
rugby so rewarding.
This is
our fourth year in existence and already we have a number of wins under
our belts as well as an impressive roster of over 40 members.
Our unique
team spirit has attracted many talented and experienced ruggers who
have played since their younger days at college and wanted to continue
to play in their working lives. We also have a large number of relative
rookies to the game who wanted to try a new sport and have some fun.
They gave it a shot and have been playing ever since. |

| In
1999, the remnants of Chaos, a women's rugby club from the Peninsula,
were trying to revive their side, struggling from a shortage of players.
At the same time, San Francisco RFC, a 34-year old men's rugby club
from the city, were trying to muster the beginnings of a women's team.
One approached the other and joint practices began in the Winter, shared
between Palo Alto and San Francisco.
After a
few weeks, a choice had to be made for the future of the team - was
it to be Peninsula Chaos or the new San Francisco Women's RFC? An almost
unanimous vote was cast in favor of San Francisco WRFC.
In 2000
the entire club underwent some radical changes. Faced with faltering
numbers and increased competition, the club entered talks with Golden
Gate Rugby Club and it was decided that the two sides would merge. The
women's team remained intact and unchanged. Though we were now known
as San Francisco Golden Gate Women's Rugby Club, we prefer to call ourselves
'City' on the field.
Our team
has gone from strength to strength in just 2 seasons, with players coming
from all over the Bay Area, as far south as San Jose, to practice with
us. We find that when women experience the fun, easy-going attitude
which accompanies our strong sense of dedication, hard work and commitment
to playing good rugby, they are eager to stick around. We are working
hard and are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in Northern
Californian women's rugby. |
