Visitors to WW1 Battlefields are surprised by the wealth of material that still remains as a memorial to Battles of long ago. Shells, bullets, weapons, cap badges and barbed wire can be found in all shapes and sizes. The Battlefields of the SOMME in particular, still give up these mementoes of the most destructive war ever fought.
The two items of shrapnel pictured are pieces of exploded shell and it takes very little imagination to hold one of these pieces of metal, to feel its weight and picture the horrible injuries it could cause.
