SAN FRANCISCO BALLET ANNOUNCES PROGRAMMING FOR FALL 2008
CHICAGO, NEW YORK, COSTA MESA, CA, AND WASHINGTON, D.C.

San Francisco Ballet makes individual moments soar
Wheeldons ballet,
Within the Golden Hour,..calls to mind the term used by photographers to describe those particularly magical periods of sunlight at the start and finish of each day...ifted straight out of the gorgeously artistic world of the Etruscans...Picking up on the stylized arm and hand gestures of the figures in those paintings
Jorma Elo('s) ...
Double Evil, whose title might just suggest the fiendish difficulty of some of the works movement sequences...The women wear bright, classical tutus but their every move hints at the almost mechanical underpinnings of ballet technique, and also suggests a bit of rebellion beneath the robotic elements.
Tomassons work,
The Fifth Season...stunningly designed...Like Wheeldon, Tomasson frames a series of duets with ensemble sections. And there was strong dancing by Tiit Helimets, Nutnaree Pipit-Sukson, Katita Waldo, Sofiane Sylve, David Karapetyan and Ivan Popov. As for the gala, there were three standout sections: The galvanic quintet for male dancers from Tomassons Concerto Grosso, with jaw-dropping performances by Pascal Molat and Diego Cruz,
Garen Scribner, James Sofranko and
Hansuke Yamamoto (the men in this company invariably have a chance to shine); a duet from
Distant Cries...danced by Yuan Yuan Tan (who moves like a calligraphic brush dipped in ink) and Damian Smith; and that socko grand pas de deux from Don Quixote, in which Kochetkova and Boada set the stage on fire./ Review
SFB took a break from "The Tour" to participate in "Fall for Dance" in NY City . . .
To page 2
"Within the Golden Hour" establishes a fluid, pulling quality as though elegantly compelling its 14 dancers to obey gravity. ...
...The audience's favorite duet came courtesy of
Sarah Van Patten, who swayed languidly like a willow in a breeze, and Pierre-Franois Vilanoba, who stealthily supported her bends.

Possokhov's "Fusion," deals, goofily, with cultural overlap. Four men in white dervish outfits are juxtaposed with four men and four women in Western pantsuits....The highlight of "Fusion," an impressionistic and theatrical work, was the spindly Yuan Yuan Tan, whose long, thin limbs provide striking angularity against the skirted dervishes, who form a seemingly impassible wall that Tan slithers through on her third attempt only to be met in a desperate pas de deux with Damian Smith.

Morris' Saturday "Joyride" was a ridiculous romp set to a frenetic soundtrack by John Adams.

"Divertimento No. 15," which restores the good humor in Mozart (and Balanchine) so often mistaken for lightness. The dancers brought an easy joyousness and sunny disposition to the Balanchine that was intensified by a unison control of gaze. In their variation solos, Frances Chung showed a fine combination of strength and grace, while Vanessa Zahorian proved a captivating presence.

Balanchine's "The Four Temperaments." It's at once classic and modern, mirroring the music of Paul Hindemith that accompanies it, and the company made the most of this masterwork. Van Patten danced effortlessly and smoldered with Tiit Helimets in the Second Variation ("Sanguinic") while Vilanoba channeled Marcel Marceau in the Third Variation ("Phlegmatic") with astonishing expressivity./ Review

The Four-City Tour is promoted while including clips from "The Ruins Proclaim the Building was Beautiful," which was not included on the tour.
Divertimento No. 15,... The coloratura footwork of Elizabeth Miner, Frances Chung and, in the central ballerina role, Tina LeBlanc was extraordinarily clear; and as the principal male dancer, Gennadi Nedvigin was a paragon of finesse, frequently landing without a sound on one leg and sustaining that position with apparently effortless assurance.
The Fifth Season ...Concerto Grosso ...The Fifth Season tries so hard to conjure a series of elegant moods that it seems insincere from the first, whereas Concerto Grosso concentrates on showcasing the truly excellent style of five of Mr. Tomassons male dancers, led here by Pascal Molat./ Review
On a Theme of Paganini is a brightly tasteful essay in ballet classicism...Maria Kochetkova,
Davit Karapetyan and (especially) Vanessa Zahorian, Joan Boada and Pascal Molat display a range of their accomplishments with simple charm.. Ibsens House, ... (each heroine sums herself up with a single expressionistic gestural motif; but why does Nora of A Dolls House keep smoothing her skirts?) ...Double Evil, he gives us the standard recipe. The extensive side lighting rids the dancers of any context, as if catching them in headlights. The women are in tutus but spend most of the time on flat feet bending this way and that. The men are dressed in blue, toss off fancy steps now and then, and hike the women about in flashy lifts../ Review
Divertimento No. 15,...From the remarkable ease and expertise of senior ballerina Tina LeBlanc to the fresh and fleet execution of the lithe Vanessa Zahorian, "Divertimento" shone.
"The Four Temperaments" .. In particular, an elegantly fierce Sarah Van Patten, supported by a lustrous Tiit Helimets.
"
Joyride"..Mr. Morris's pulsing and free-flowing movements -- some straight out of ballet's strict, academic vocabulary and others smilingly skewed into stiff-limbed semaphores or strike-a-pose attitudes -- pass through and over and around his cast of four women and four men as light might play across unearthed nuggets of gold.
"Within the Golden Hour"..along the way it manages to draw one's eye to its inner workings, with the choreographer's remarkable gift for devising ./ Review
