Welcome to the SEU website.
The Syndicalist Education Union is a group whose purpose and goal is
to develop a grassroots union and activist movement in the education
sector. We are opposed to participation in parliamentary politics and
the numbers games and manipulation that such activity implies, and
prefer to concentrate our energies where we feel they will be most
effective and where we can retain our dignity and self-respect.
We formed in March 2001 at La Trobe University, Melbourne, and carry
out as many activities we can with the members and free time that we
have. None of our membership are professional politicians or
revolutionaries; we all have lives outside of social activism which
place constraints on our time.
A large part of our activity is devoted to the concept of free
education, both in a financial sense, for the students who partake of
it, but also in a theoretical sense; we believe the education system
should teach us how to think, not what to think. We base our criticism
of the education system as it currently exists on these two beliefs. We
are opposed to HECS (Higher Education Constribution Scheme) and such
loan schemes as seem politically expedient for whatever government is in
power at the time.
For more information about us, here is a speil written at the time of our formation (aka
last year). Here is a newer speil. The first issue of our newsletter, Class Struggle (mind the
pun), up at this site as a PDF file. We're too dumb to be able to figure
out how to put the pages together, so here is page
one, and here is page two.
