In the beginning Joey was pretty much a rough kid, also being a bully as was Tristan and they picked on many kids, Yugi being one of them. But when Yugi took a beating for them from an even bigger bully, Joey became immediate everlasting friends with Yugi.
Joey is mostly the comic relief of the show, either by his obsession with food or wisecrack jokes and yet he can be quite serious at times too. He is always there for Yugi, helping as much as he can. In Duelist Kingdom, he entered to win the prize for his sister's operation to save her from failing eyesight. He however lost to Yugi in the semi finals but Yugi gave him the prize money anyway, saying that he wasn't there to get rich but to save his grandfather's soul.
From a novice duellist to now pretty much a pro, Joey can pretty well hold his own. Joey also seems to have a crush on Mai, who at first ignores him but later on starts to have feelings for him too, though they're pretty much hidden. Probably the only downside to Joey is that he loses his temper everytime someone makes fun of him or calls him names, which is most of the time Seto Kaiba. However Joey sitll manages to pull through and will always be by Yugi's side no matter what the fight or challenge, being a true friend.

The main character of the show, Yugi is often depicted as a shy but otherwise quite friendly person. He lives with his grandfather who owns a gameshop and its from him that Yugi actually got into Duel Monsters. Also from his grandpa he received an ancient artifact, the Millennium Puzzle. And once Yugi pieced it together, he soon came to know his alter ego, Yami Yugi, and was soon thrust into ancient knowledge of more then 5000 years ago and that of the rest of the Millennium Items.
Yugi believes in the 'Heart of the Cards' which has never failed him yet. He has strong, everlasting friendship with his other companions and also has quite a few enemies who are either out to beat him and claim his title of 'King of Games'; to win his Millennium Puzzle; to obtain the three Egyptian God Cards or, in Seto Kaiba's case, to just plainly beat him and prove who is better. Nevertheless, Yugi is not put down by this and continues striving forward, showing us that determination, friendship and expressing one self from the heart is the true way to success.

In the beginning was also a tough guy and a bully just like Joey but when Yugi took a beating from the bigger bully, Tristan too became Yugi's friend. He also isn't a duellist like Yugi and Joey but does have some cards. He's mostly there for support when the two go up and duel their hardest ones.
He and Joey bickers most of the time and he is usually the quickest one to panic, but Tristan is mostly there for some comic relief too and also being one of the smart ones of the group. He also has this huge crush on Joey's sister, Serenity, which makes his friend crazy when he goes off to see her or what not. Duke is also somewhat his rival when they're both trying to win Serenity's affection. Nevertheless he is a key character to the gang and it wouldn't be the same with out him.

Pharoah Atemu was the young Pharaoh who saved the world from complete obliteration 5000 years ago. Then his soul was locked away in the Millennium Puzzle and it was only when Yugi put it together did he once again become alive.
Pharaoh Atemu, or known as Yami in beginning, most of the time helped Yugi during his duels. In the beginning he was fairly protective of him, punishing any evildoers with the powers of 'Mind Crush' or 'Obliviate'. But when it came to the near death of Seto Kaiba in Duelist Kingdom, Yugi definetly drew the line. When Yugi was battling Mai, Yami asked for a second chance, which Yugi granted and that was when Yami became much more merciful then severe.
Not much is known about the darker half Yugi though little by little, he and the others learn more about his past. It is actually Ishizu who started to help reveal to Yami who he really was just before Battle City began. And then everyone learns more of his past when Dartz enters the scene. However, in the end when Pharaoh Atemu learns everything and after a deciding duel with Yugi, he must go back to help change the future of Egypt in the past and this is the last we see of him.

A childhood friend of Yugi, Tea seems to be the main moral supporter of the group. She's very tight with the gang and and is very big on friendship, sometimes speaking of it to others and to her friends repeatedly.
She's not much of a duellist but she did duel against Mai to win Yugi some starchips to gain entrance into Pegasus' castle and she did duel against Crump in Noa's virtual world.
As for her love life, it seems her feelings could go either for Yugi or the spirit. No matter though, Tea will always be there for her friends no matter what danger or cause.
