XXXVI. Pomona and Vertumnus
("Blood roses, blood roses, I've shaved every place where you've been, Boy. Y'know I've shaved every place where you've been."--Tori Amos)

by Jeremy Wayne Couch

Rachel of the morning (Jason's always quiet)
Rachel of the sun (Jason's always shy)
Rachel, pretty Rachel (Jason always looks away)
Where did you get your gun (When I look him in the eye)

Rachel was in the garden
Dancing in bare feet
Rachel was in the garden
Singing soft and sweet

Jason liked to listen
As Rachel sang her song
His world has grown too quiet
Now that Rachel's gone

Rachel of the morning (Jason's always quiet)
Rachel of the sun (Jason's always shy)
Rachel, pretty Rachel (Jason always looks away)
Where did you get your gun (When I look him in the eye)

Rachel sang to the sun
Rachel sang to the dove
Jason pretended it was to him
she sang her song of love

Rachel sang to the sun
Rachel sang to the dove
She thought both were lucky
For they cannot fall in love

Rachel of the morning (Jason's always quiet)
Rachel of the sun (Jason's always shy)
Rachel, pretty Rachel (Jason always looks away)
Where did you get your gun (When I look him in the eye)

Rachel with your rose-red hair
Rachel with your scorn
Rachel did you bleed when
He pricked you with his thorn

Rachel was a siryn
Jason was her prey
The victim caught the hunter
by surprise one summer day

Rachel of the morning (Jason's always quiet)
Rachel of the sun (Jason's always shy)
Rachel, pretty Rachel (Jason always looks away)
Where did you get your gun (When I look him in the eye)

I was in the garden
I heard Rachel scream
My eyes locked with Jason's
When I ran upon the scene

Rachel's in the garden now
She lies beneath a stone
Where once there was a wild rose
Twisted weeds have grown

Rachel of the morning (Jason's always quiet)
Rachel of the sun (Jason's always shy)
Rachel, pretty Rachel (Jason always looks away)
Where did you get your gun (When I look him in the eye)
