by Jeremy Wayne Couch
At night as I lie awake,
the chaotic stirrings begin again
She comes to me
putting her arms around me
whispering, "Sleep."
I do,
but in my dreams
the dark tides engulf me
I can't breathe
I cry for help
awakening alone in bed
beaten
weary
from spending the night
trying to keep afloat
on my soul's stormy sea
She comes to me
laying her hand upon me
like a whisper
I am calm
