The lifetime medical cost of one AIDS case is estimated at $69,000. AIDS has robbed Americans of 644,245 years of potential life as of May 1992. An estimated $2,764 is spent by patients during the first 6 months after an AIDS diagnosis. The economy suffers a loss of $600,000 in medical costs and lost wages for every HIV infection. By the end of the decade the economic impact of HIV will reach 2.5 - 4.5 trillion dollars. Something must be done to stop this disease!
Since the first reported AIDS cases in 1981 the mortality rate was at 93%. I am happy to say that as of June 1996 the mortality rate is now down to 63%. We can only hope that with the addition of the newly approved drugs, earlier medical intervention, and the comtinued practice of safer, sex, that these percentages will continue to decline.
