Here are some terms that might help you
out. Several others are explained throughout LB.
Stallion- A mature male horse, 4 yrs
of age and older, can be a father horse
Mare- A mature female horse, 4 yrs
of age and older
Foal- A baby horse of either sex
still with its mother
Filly- A baby girl horse, under 4
yrs of age
Colt- A baby boy horse, under 4 yrs
of age
Weanling- A baby horse of either
sex that has just been taken away from its mother
Yearling- A horse of either sex that
is 1 yr old
Gelding- A male horse of any age
that can't have babies
Pony- A horse of any age or sex that
will mature at under 14.2 hands
Mule- An equine with a male donkey
for a father and a female horse as a mother
Tack- the equipment used when riding
a horse
Green- A horse that is inexpierienced
Off side- The right side of a horse
Near side- The left side of a horse
Hand- The way horses are measured,
4 inches. hh=hands high
Lame- When a horse is limping, not
sound.
Sound- When a horse is not limping,
stiff, etc.
