WORK OF POLISH ATHLETES The aim of the study was evaluation of occupational life sphere of disabled persons practicing professional sport. 83 sportsmen with motor system injury or vision defect, who took part in Summer Paralympic Games in Sydney 2000 were questioned. 82 respondents 63 men and 19 women filled in the questionnaires. Made analysis shown, that in Polish national team the majority of the sportsmen had secondary technical education (28%), and 20% of the questioned were graduated from university. The biggest group were clerks (15%) and skilled workers (12%). The numerous group was also pupils and students (28%), but 15% of the respondents were unemployed. In 42% paralympians’ opinion their job was consisted with their qualifications, but only for 13% of the athletes the work they practice was satisfied. The respondents worked mainly in mixed, healthy and disabled company (43%) and only 4% worked only with disabled. Only 16% of the respondents ascertained, that they do not have occupational successes. The rest noticed success in occupational sphere, mainly owning a good job. 28% of the athletes, had also occupational failures, the worst was inability of occupational realization and wrong choice of the job. Analyzing evaluation of effectivity of their occupational work or study comparing to the state before starting training, the majority ascertained the improvement. Only one of the respondents noticed worsening of occupational effectivity. Also the great number of the respondents considered the experience and sport character acquired during systematical trainings were helpful to fulfil occupational or students duties. Despite, that among paralympians participating in Games in Sydney 2000 dominated employed people, 43% of the respondents estimated their incomes as not sufficient to maintain the family or themselves.
