Practicing sport and professional rehabilitation of the handicapped

Professional activity is very important in everybody’s life. One of the means supporting preparation of the handicapped to perform particular professions is sport in this group.

The objective of the present paper was to specify the role of sport in professional rehabilitation of the disabled practicing different sport disciplines, and also to get to know the opinion of those handicapped who were physically inactive.

The survey was conducted in two groups of men. The first group consisted of disabled sportsmen (39 persons) practicing chosen disciplines in different sport clubs and associations for the handicapped. The other group consisted of 36 disabled persons who had not been involved in any sport activity since they became invalid.

As far as the socio-professional status of the people subject to the research is concerned, above 50% of the respondents in both groups were not employed. 10% of the respondents, in both groups, worked only in the environment of healthy people, and even fewer of them worked exclusively with the handicapped. In the group of inactive people one third of the respondents did not find any connection between practicing sport and finding a job. 50% of the respondents were of the opposite opinion; they believed that finding a job could be easier for handicapped sportspeople thanks to greater physical ability resulting from regular training.

Key words: disability, sport of the handicapped, professional career of the handicapped
