Unemployment apart from financial difficulties cases many other problems such as lower social value and the feeling of being a burden for the family. The aim of the research is to characterize the population of disabled people in Gdańsk and their professional activities. The population of disabled people was divided by sex, age, education and the job. The situation of disabled people in Gdańsk was comprised with the situation in Poland. The estimation of the problem may help in effective decision making process for improving the employment offer for disabled especially on the local level. The problem is more important taking into account the increase of the number of disabled people. Polish society especially local communities should take care of disabled people and give a chance for better life for them. It is a profitable strategy not only for the group but for the whole society also. To realize this strategy we need information of the number of disabled people, the structure of the group, their family and social situation. The increasing unemployment effects especially disabled people. Disabled people must compete with the healthy ones for a job. Key words: disability, disabled persons, employment
