It was a match made in Hollywood. Two people who dearly loved each other. Had the perfect wedding. Then had a wonderful trip to the Governor's mansion on up to the White House. Although I really wasnt interested in politics or even who was leading the country at the time, I had noticed that this amazing couple, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, had a rare relationship.
You could tell by the way she gazed up at him that there was a true and deep love of her husband. She always looked out for his best interests. Only once did I have the kind of relationship where I gazed up in awe at a man. He had commented on the look that I always gave him. He said that he knew by that look that I felt a true love for him. The President seemed to like having her around all the time. Even listened intently on what she had to say.
There are those that felt she ran the country, not him. I do believe that she had alot of input. But, isnt that the way a relationship is supposed to be? A sharing of thoughts, feelings and ideas? Isnt that the true IDEAL relationship?
Most people strive to find a person whom they share common interests and beliefs. Others are looking for a person that is their ultimate best friend. In the case of the Reagans, they had it all! Who but a very best friend would sit by and watch their best friend wither away for years? Not many relationships I know that have survived in this day and age, through a debilitating illness. That is a sad but true fact!
Instead of people looking only at the political side of the Reagan years, they should also focus on the facts. He was a great husband. He shared everything with his wife. She loved him so strongly that you would have to have been blind not to see it. They epitomized what a marriage should be.
If I ever venture into the world of domesticity again, I hope that my relationship will be something like theirs. A relationship built on trust, caring, empathy and friendship! And I can only hope that if my hubby becomes ill, that I will have the strength to sit lovingly beside him during his journey. To me, Nancy Reagan is my hero!
Goodnight Mr. President! And THANK YOU both for showing us the way! |
