The Ottawa Senators returned to the NHL after a 60-year absence, as they returned for the 1992-93 season. The Senators played their home games at the Ottawa Civic Centre, which was renovated to be brought up to NHL standards as their new arena, The Palladium, was starting to be built. Total seating in the Ottawa Civic Centre was 10,500, the smallest arena in the NHL. On June 18, 1992, the Senators chose 21 players from other teams in the expansion draft, and on June 20, 1992, the team selected Alexei Yashin with their first pick in the NHL Entry Draft. On October 8, 1992, the Senators opened the season in front of a sellout at the Civic Centre in downtown Ottawa, and the Senators defeated the Montreal Canadiens, the team who was going to win the Stanley Cup that season, 5-3. Neil Brady scored the Senators 1st goal at 0:26 in the 2nd period, Sylvain Turgeon scored the game winner at 17:51 of the 3rd, and Doug Smail scored an empty net goal with 15 seconds left in the game. The team would then go on a 21 game winless streak (0-20-1), and win only 9 more games in the entire season. It was a long season for the fans, but an exciting one, as Ottawa finally had a team of its own. |
