| Senators Sign Smolinski to 4 Year Contract The Ottawa Senators have resigned centre Bryan Smolinski to a 4 year contract, reportedly worth $10 million. The Sens acquired Smolinski at the trading deadline in March from the Los Angeles Kings for prospect Tim Gleason. In 10 regular season games with Ottawa, Smolinski had 8 points (3G-5A). He played a key part in the Sens best ever playoff run, getting 9 points (2G-7A) in 18 games. Smolinski, 31, was going to be an unrestricted free agent if the Senators did not sign him by July 1st. The Toledo, Ohio native was Boston's 1st round draft pick in the 1990 Entry Draft, and he has played with the Bruins, Penguins, Islanders and Kings in his NHL career. In 749 career games, he has recorded 488 points (212G-276A), and has 454 PIM. His best season was in 1995-96 with Pittsburgh, when he recorded 64 points (24G-40A) in 81 games with the Penguins. |

| Coaching Legend Passes Away Ottawa Senators assistant coach Roger Neilson has passed away, he was 69 years old. Neilson had been battling skin and bone cancer, and he died in his home in Peterborough. He had been an NHL coach or scout in each of the past 25 years, but had never won the Stanley Cup. The closest he came to winning it was in 1982 while he was the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, getting them into the finals before they lost to the New York Islanders. Neilson was nicknamed "Captain Video" in the 1970's for introducing videotape as a teaching tool. While coaching Toronto in the late 70's, he was fired by team owner Harold Ballard right before a game, and when Ballard couldn't find a replacement he asked Neilson to wear a paper bag over his head while coaching the game. Neilson had a great sense of humour, and will be missed by the hockey world. |
