The work on this project is moving forward. The study committee working on the proposed recreational and fitness multiplex has met with the architects who will be developing a conceptual plan. They have finalized the features that will be included, and the drawing phase has begun. August 15 is the date for the unveiling of the architectural drawings of this vision to the public. The meeting will be at the City Administration Building auditorium in the early evening. Watch the newspapers and listen to local news and community calendar announcements for the meeting time.
Just a reminder that our Volunteer Computer Guru, �Sir Winston� would like to help you learn what you want to know about computers / internet. He can do that here at the Center and will teach you by hands-on method at whatever pace suits you. Call the Center office, 762-9259, and let us know, and we will get you together with Winston to set up a convenient day and time for your lessons.
We have received a few responses regarding our plans to have a booth at the Middle Tennessee District Fair the end of September to showcase the many talents and abilities of seniors. The booth will display handcrafted items made by seniors, and we will have Senior Ambassadors stationed in the booth at peek times to talk to people about the Center and the activities and programs available. This is a great opportunity to promote our Senior Center. Youcan help us by giving us a call and letting us know what you can do to help with this.
One of the new components of our �New Beginnings� is a Senior Ambassador Program. This will be an organized group of members who are able and willing to actively promote goodwill throughout the county and beyond on behalf of the Senior Center. There will be a volunteer job description outlining the scope of duties of an Ambassador. If you think you might want to do this, check with us in the office to find out what would be expected of those who sign up to be an Ambassador. We plan to institute some way to reward our volunteers in a small way, but the greatest reward will be the feeling of usefulness, value and self worth you will experience as a volunteer. At the August 29 �New Beginnings� celebration, we will introduce those who have enrolled as a Senior Ambassador.
Last year around the Thanksgiving / Christmas holiday season, I took orders for Friendship Fruitcakes as a mini-fundraiser for the Center. I ended up making about 20 cakes. I have had a few individuals request another cake during the year. We can do this again this year, but I would like to get orders further ahead to allow plenty of time to process the fruit (it takes 30 days), and get the cakes baked without having to rush around so much during the busy holiday period. This cake contains peaches, pineapple, maraschino cherries, coconut and pecans. The coconut and nuts may be omitted. It can also be made using applesauce instead of oil. At the bottom of this page is an order coupon if you would like to order one or more cakes.
