| Our conversations and work toward revitalization of the Senior Center programs is coming along well. On June 29, I met with Mr. Cromer Smotherman, volunteer Jeannette Mathis, and Program Coordinator Georgia Whitehead and we discussed ideas and visions for programs to be offered through the Senior Center and potential partnerships to help make these new programs possible . Mr. Smotherman has a vision of accomplishing our goals for improvement by working together with other community resources, such as the Adult Basic Education program of the Lawrence School System, the Labor and Workforce Development Board, Community Clubs, and other businesses and industries. On June 30, he and representatives of some of these entities, along with Program Coordinator Georgia Whitehead had a meeting at the Summit to discuss these ideas and think about ways that various organizations and agencies can work together to provide the things that are needed to help people in Lawrence County grow and expand their horizons, with the ultimate end being better quality of life for everyone. We will be using the results of meetings such as these, along with the survey information we get back from members and other interested people to pinpoint the specific activities we want to initiate or expand. We have received several surveys back from members, and I plead with every member to share your ideas with us to guide us as we decide what new activities to undertake. One thing I didnt think to include with the survey is a provision that anyone may simply call the Center and give us your thoughts and ideas, rather than filling out the yellow form. I have had a couple who called with their ideas, and that works just as well as a written form. We will record your ideas and suggestions and use them along with forms turned in to the Center. We will also be making public announcements by radio and newspaper that we want input from any other interested individuals in this process. Even if you dont currently have time to participate in Center activities, it is important for us to know what the membership and future participants want to have available at such time as you may want to become active in the Center. This organization was not formed and does not now exist to serve the management or staff, but rather for the staff and management to serve the membership. We need your help to do it. By mid-August, we are going to make some program/activity plans for our New Beginning, and I would like to unveil this to you in conjunction with our August Birthday / Anniversary celebration on Tuesday, August 29. We will expand the usual activities of that day to include some music in the morning, lunch, which will be provided by the Center (you dont have to bring anything at all - just come and enjoy - PLEASE REGISTER), and a meeting after lunch to explain where we will be going in the future, and how we plan to get there. MARK AUGUST 29 ON YOUR CALENDAR TO COME TO THE CENTER FOR MUSIC, LUNCH, AND A PRESENTATION ON OUR NEW BEGINNING. Mr. Smotherman is energized and excited about the future for our Center, and he is gifted in working with others to develop ideas and plans, and then to find the ways and means to bring those plans to fruition. I hope you will get excited about this too, and be a part of making it happen. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ On July 13 the Senior Center and the Summit sponsored a political candidate forum to allow those candidates who were not otherwise committed to give a 3 to 5 minute talk on their ideas and plans for the particular office they aspire to hold. Twenty-four candidates accepted the invitation. There was a good crowd of seniors and others to hear what the candidates had to say. Everyone seemed to enjoy the afternoon, and several stayed around after the forum to visit and enjoy the delicious refreshments provided by the Summit. This was done on a fairly short notice, so it was not in the July newsletter. Cromer Smotherman, along with Georgia and several volunteers did the legwork of getting the invitations mailed out and setting up the tables and decorating for the event. Volunteer Jeannette Mathis contacted several candidates and secured several flower arrangements to decorate the tables. My thanks to all who had a part in getting this together.
