SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT, APRIL 21 - 22.   We are trying something entirely new this year as a fund raising tool, and are hopeful that it can become a major annual event.  Georgia Whitehead and her husband, Tony, were involved with their three daughters during their growing up years in girls softball, and Tony is still involved with youth sports.  They volunteered to put together a junior high girls softball tournament in partnership with one of our local schools.  New Prospect Elementary and the Senior Center will share the work and the proceeds of this event.  The tournament will take place at Bobby Brewer Park on Weakley Creek Road on Friday evening and Saturday.   If games get delayed, we will finish Sunday afternoon, after church.  We will need a lot of help with concessions.  Even if you cant work in the concessions, please plan to support the effort with your presence.

THE SENIOR CENTER HAS A NEW PARTNER. I was recently contacted by Mr. Cromer Smotherman and Ms. Patti Shedd who are interested in working with the Senior Center by sponsoring some activities (including some financial support) to provide programs and activities to encourage and assist seniors to stay active and enjoy a good quality of life.  Patti is employed by The Summit (formerly Magnolia Manor), and Mr. Smotherman is a resident there.  We hope this is just the beginning of a program to involve more local businesses, professional people, etc., in partnering with the Senior Center in our efforts to serve the senior population of Lawrence County.   Mr. Smotherman and Patti were anxious to get started, and eagerly agreed to provide the refreshments for our Valentines Day Party.  I am grateful for their interest in the activities of the senior center, and look forward to more joint efforts with them.  (When I say partner, understand that this is not any kind of legal arrangement -- only a mutual interest in fulfilling our mission.)

SOUTH CENTRAL DISTRICT SENIOR GAMES - APRIL 24 - 28 This is an important year for the senior games because it is the qualifying year to participate in the National Senior Games in 2007 which will be held relatively close to us in Kentucky.  The games are all divided into age groups, and those winning first, second, or third place at the District Games are eligible to compete in the State Games at Franklin; then winners at the State Games are eligible to go to the National Senior Games in 2007.  You dont have to be a professional athlete to participate in any of these games.  Its a lot of fun and you meet some nice people from other counties in the district.  Id love to take a group to the State Games and later to the National Games.  Registration forms should be coming out soon, so check with us here at the Center or at the Parks and Recreation office and get signed up for some fun activities.
