| The Daemen College-Seneca Babcock Partnership: A project of the Center for Sustainable Communities and Civic Engagement (1998-present) |
| In the spring of 1999, the Daemen College Social Work Department entered into a partnership with the Seneca Babcock Community of South Buffalo. Our purpose is to empower the community residents as they face social issues such as illegal drug dealing, teen pregnancy, high school drop-out, poverty, cultural awareness, and issues that come with aging and being unable to leave one's home. |
| Once a neighborhood containing a police department, fire station, grocery store, and school, it now remains a place full of people dedicated to the survival of their community without many of the previous resources. The strength of this community lies in the individuals who have lived, generation after generation, in this location. The Seneca Babcock Community Center, Boys and Girls' Club, Seneca Street United Methodist Church, and Teen Haven are examples of the social agencies offering services to the residents. It is in these agencies that students are given a place to learn about the community and become active volunteers. Opportunities exist to serve children, adolescents, and the elderly in both micro and macro settings. |

| NEWS! Be a student at Daemen College Day! On Sat. May 3, twenty-four children from Seneca Babcock became college students for a day! They traveled to Daemen College where over twenty Daemen students greeted them and faculty who had volunteered in the After-School programs at Seneca Babcock. This was an opportunity for the children to see where students from Daemen who had become their friends went to class, ate and lived! The children toured the campus, including classrooms, the library, the computer labs, and the Student Center. The favorite places for the Seneca Babcock kids were the gym and the cafeteria, where they could eat all they wanted (and they did!). The children were given a demonstration by the Daemen Drill Team, and some of the Babcock boys got to play a game of basketball against the Daemen Basketball Team! All of the children received an official Daemen picture ID, making them a college student for a day! Besides the fun that the children had, the possibility that they could go to college if they worked hard and finished high school became more of a reality for them through this visit. Our goal is to continue this inspiration through repeat visits to the college and continued participation by Daemen students in tutoring in the After-School programs.
