ANGELS

The angels of Christian art can be traced back to the winged messengers-spirits of Assyrian sculpture and the Cherubim of Jewish Art which were human figures with wings. Seraphs described in the Old Testament have three pairs of wings, with which they reverently cover both face and feet as they fly around the throne of God; and this passage provide the type for the seraphs of Christian art. The angels of the Old Testament are messengers of Jehovah in human guise.
