Mike Ramsey

On August 9, 1979, the name Mike Ramsey made hockey history. The 18-year-old native of Minneapolis became the first American hockey player to be selected in the first round of the National Hockey League amateur draft. He was selected by the Buffalo Sabres. He stated following the draft that he had plans to play with the Olympic team and had planned out the possibility of returning to the University of Minnesota where he played one season under Herb Brooks. The 18-year-old defenseman played in 34 games for the Gophers in 1978 and was selected to the NCAA all-tourney team. He played on the Junior National team. He also lettered three years at Roosevelt, and was an outstanding tennis player.
