Kira Yamato
Kira is a 16 year-old Coordinator who lives in a neutral territory in space. As a Coordinator, he possesses superhuman abilities and is a computer programming expert. He finds himself in the middle of the war between the Naturals and the Coordinators, when his school is attacked by ZAFT [Coordinator team]. That is when he gets involved in the war, and must fight to protect his friends.

Athrun Zala
Athrun is a childhood friend of Kira's, but after the loss of his mother in an earlier battle, signs up and becomes a member of the ZAFT team and the pilot of the Aegis After he realizes that Kira had taken the side of his enemy, Athrun is determined to make Kira see that he is being manipulated.

Cagalli Yula Athha
Cagalli is the daughter of the leader of the neutral nation Orb. After learning that her nation had been helping the Earth Alliance, she travels to Heliopolis to confirm her father's betrayal.

Lacus Clyne
Lacus is the daughter of ZAFT's leader, but she treats everyone with respect and kindness. She is also a huge pop star, which has made her the idol among Coordinators.

Fllay Allster
Fllay is the daughter of an Earth Alliance minister, and she is also Kira's classmate. She escapes the destruction of her space colony, but after watching her father's ship destroyed by Coordinators, she joins the military and vows to avenge her father's death.

Sai Argyle
Sai is a student at Heliopolis College, along with his fiance Fllay and classmate Kira. Unlike Fllay, he is comfortable with Kira being a Coordinator, and joins the fight as an electronic warfare specialist.

Miriallia Haww
Miriallia is a student at Heliopolis, and the best friend of Kira. After escaping the space colony's destruction, she, like many others, volunteers on the Archangel warship, and becomes a field controller.

Tolle Koenig
Tolle is a very cheerful student at Heliopolis, a good friend of Kira, and also Miriallia's boyfriend. He also finds himself onboard the Archangel, and later becomes the ship's co-pilot.

Kuzzey Buskirk
Kuzzey is another student at Heliopolis, but unlike his comrades, he is a bit suspicious and prejudice against Coordinators, which makes him weary of Kira. But, he still joins everyone else on the Archangel, and becomes a communications operator.

Yzak Jule
Yzak is a Coordinator and the skilled pilot of the captured mobile suit the Duel. His hot temper and agressive manner makes him ideal for engaging in heated battles with the enemy.

Dearka Elthman
Dearka is the pilot of the Buster and he inherited his father's hatred towards Naturals, and as a result becomes a natural ally for his equally arrogant teammate Yzak.

Nicol Amarfi
Nicol is the pilot of the Blitz and a piano player, but unlike the others, he feels sympathy towards the casualties of the battle. His sentimental attitude leads his teammates to accuse of him cowardice. His sole ally on the ZAFT team is Athrun, who serves as his brother and protector.
