Strangers In Paradise is one of the books with the most emotional depth out there. If you read a collection you will be converted.
Kurt Busiek is on of the best writers out there. He will never go for an easy option, but come up with interesting twists and storytelling techniques. His superhero book Astro City is probably the best ever written.
Frank Miller - the definative comic book creator.
