What's New

Name changed to Citizens for Huronia District Hospital

After assurance from Dr. Kevin Smith and the Deputy Minister the Secular Hospital issue is now off the table.

However, there are outstanding hospital issues which we are addressing.
The outstanding issues indicate a value in changing our name to “Citizens for Huronia District Hospital”

Citizens for HDH to meet with Dr. Smith

January 21, 2008

Who are we?
Citizens for HDH executive was elected at a large public meeting to represent the concerns of members of the community. We are all members of the HDH Corporation. Citizens for HDH liaise regularly with local politicians, doctors, nurses and other stakeholders. We have an active email/phone communication system to over 1000 households.

Our name was changed to reflect the issues other than secularity which concern our membership. Since we represent the hospital users we have a vested interest in working with Dr. Smith and the appointed board to ensure the optimum functioning of our health institutions. We stand for transparency and democratic process in our public institutions. Our questions stem from these principles.

Community Based Board Selection Committee:
• How will members be chosen? What criteria will be used? When will the names be made public?
• Will there be a public call for applicants for the new board?
• What is the timeline for final board selection?

Interim Board:
• How will candidates be informed about the nature of their responsibilities and the extent of their commitment?
• Will resumes of candidates submitted by the Citizens be equally considered? These persons were selected from the community using the skill matrix guidelines of the document on Ontario Hospital Governance. They have been selected as candidates based on their skills and willingness to serve. The majority have had no involvement with the Citizens group.

Duration:
• Will board members be appointed for varying lengths of time as outlined in the hospital bylaws?
• How will length of service be determined?
• At which AGM will normal elections by corporation members resume?
Transparency:
• Will board meetings be open to corporation members and the media? Will regular reports be issued to the public?
• Will annual reports/financial statements/ minutes of meetings be posted on the web?Training and Orientation:
• What plans are in place to ensure that the new board is equipped to deal with the complexities of hospital governance?
• How will the new board be brought up to date on the financial picture at HDH given its complexity and history?
• Will a financial audit be made available to the new board members?
• Will board members have access to ongoing training and consultation as needed?
• Will the board be encouraged to use appointed community advisory sub-committees to assist
• In decision- making on various issues?

Outstanding Concerns
• Staff Morale: Will this issue be addressed before the appointment of the new board? Recent events have suggested this remains a serious issue with staff.
• Relationship with PGH: Given that the function of PGH will change under the LHIN restructuring, will there be changes to the Alliance ?
