Since Self Injury is not spoken of very openly, it is commonly mistaken to be very rare and affects only those that are "psychologically unstable" or "crazy". Nothing is further from the truth. Self Injury affects an estimated 2,000,000 Americans. Two million. That's a big number. 90% of these SIers began when they were teenagers. (I fit into that category). An average SIers begins around the age fourteen (again, another category I fall under) and continues with increasing severity into their twenties. However, keep in mind that some may begin (unconciously) hurting themselves as early as age seven or begin anytime later in their life. Self Injury does not affect only the "psychologically unstable" or "crazy", and is definitely not rare.
SIers - You are not alone.
