There are many myths associated with Self Injury as it is easy to misunderstand SI if you do not suffer from it. Many people are quick to jump to conclusions about SI that are, in fact, entirely opposite the truth.

Self Injury is a suicide attempt gone wrong.

Hardly. Self Injury is a coping mechanism. A way to survive. To lessen the internal pain the SIer is experiencing. Isn't finding a way to survive, and trying to take your life two completely opposite things? In most cases. the SIer does not want to die. Not to say feelings or thoughts of suicide have never arisen in the SIer, but the act of SI and suicide are separate issues.

Self Injury is attention seeking behavior.

Oh no, no, no. Self Injury is a way to deal with internal pain. And let me just say this - most SIers try to cover or hide their scars (long-sleeved shirts for marks on the arms, etc.) - so covering up the "evidence" is hardly showing it off.

Some Self Injury is minor - therefore it is not serious.

The severity of the person's feelings or reasons for SI cannot be determined by the severity of the cut/bruise/burn, etc.

Self Injury is untreatable. Once a sufferer, always a sufferer.

The problem is that many people, including professionals, do not understand Self Injury. They cannot - or barely are able to understand it, let alone think of a way to help. However, there are professionals who have dealt and are comfortable with this issue, you just need to look around and choose wisely. Some people (a significant amount) who do not receive treatment are able to get through it themselves and stop. It just depends on the person. But it is definitely
not a hopeless case.

It is Boarderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

Self Injury alone is not sufficient enough for a diagnosis of BPD. BPD requires five of nine criteria, of which Self Injury is only one symptom.

It is so-and-so's fault.

Self Injury is a personal thing. It involves you and only you. So-and-so may have triggered you, but the SI is not their fault.

SIers are a danger to other people.

Hardly. An SIer is unlikely to harm anyone else, they focus on themselves. These are completely separate issues.

SIers are crazy.

SIers are not crazy, they are people who suffer from internal/emotional pain.
