| Listed below are common terms used in relation to Self Injury/found on the site. Addiction - Compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming act/substance. Bang - To wrist bang/head bang/etc. Bipolar - A diagnosis in which an individual alternates between states of deep depression and extreme elation. -For more information on Bipolar click here. Biting - A form of Self Injury. To cause physical pain by biting oneself. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) - A diagnosis in which an individual often experiences a repetitive pattern of disorganization and instability in self-image, mood, behavior, and close relationships. - For more information on BPD click here. Breaking Bones - A form of Self Injury. To cause physical pain to oneself by the deliberate breaking of bones. Burning - A form of Self Injury. To cause physical pain by deliberately burning oneself using hot metal, putting out cigarettes on one's skin, a hot burner, hot water, etc. Cutting - A form of Self Injury. To cause physical pain by cutting oneself using a sharp object. Depression - A diagnosis in which an individual has constant feelings of sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, guilt and/or anxiety. - For more information of Depression click here. Diagnosis - The act of identifying or determining the nature and cause of a psychological disorder through evaluation of the patient and their history. Done by a certified therapist or psychologist. Endorphins - Any of a group of peptide hormones that bind to opiate receptors and are found mainly in the brain. When released, endorphins reduce the sensation of pain and cause a sense of calmness. Head Banging - A form of Self Injury. To cause physical pain to oneself by hitting their head against a hard surface. Manic Depression - Bipolar. - For more information on Manic Depression click here. Scratching - A form of Self Injury. To cause physical pain to oneself by scratching skin with fingernails or objects. Self Injury - The commission of deliberate harm to one's own body. The injury is done to oneself, without the aid of another person. Acts that are committed with consicous suicidal intent or are associated with sexual arousal are excluded. SI - Self Injury. SIer - Self Injurer. (A person who Self Injures.) SI's - Self Injures. Triggering - Of depressing, serious, or explicit material which may cause feelings of depression and the urge to Self Injure. Wound Interference - A form of Self Injury. To cause physical pain to oneself by interfering with the healing of a wound. Wrist Banging - A form of Self Injury. To cause physical pain to oneself by hitting one's wrist against a hard surface, usually resulting in bruising.
