Parents:

Francis Smith, NORPAC Navy deceased, KIA 2011.

Rank:
Lieutenant Commander

Posting:
Second Officer\Communications Officer, UEO Excalibur ASV 7100

Career:
Graduating from the UEO Academy in 2033, specialising in Operations, Smiths first assignment was aboard the UEO Sierra, where he was assigned to the aging SSNs radio room. When the Sierra was attacked by Macronesian raiding parties in October that year, Smith earned a commendation by helping injured crewmen to evacuate the stricken sub. He was reassigned to the UEO Callisto, where he took up the position of Assistant Com Officer. During that time, Smith excelled in decoding and translating Chau-Di coded communications during the infamous Andaman Sea Incident of 2034. His actions prevented a Chau-Di cruiser from sneaking behind the UEO naval blockade and launching an attack on fleeing Thai dissidents.

Smith continued to serve aboard the Callisto until 2035, when he accepted a position aboard the UEO Phoenix DSV, as Chief Com Officer, with a promotion to Lieutenant. After an uneventful cruise in the North Atlantic, the Phoenix was rotated to the Indian Ocean, where it came into constant contact with Macronesian forces. Smiths skill with East Asian languages came in useful yet again in 2037, following the signing of the Ceylon Accords. The Phoenix was seconded to the UEO Indian Third Fleet during the duration of the Chau-Di collapse, under the command of John Barratt. Smiths abilities impressed the commander, and Barratt requested the young Lieutenant transfer to the Yorktown, with promotion to Lieutenant Commander.

It was Smith who intercepted the first frantic transmissions from New Cape Quest during the Macronesian assault in 2037, and who managed to track coded Macronesian communications to determine the position and strength of the attacking craft.

While onboard the Yorktown, Smith and Barratt became firm friends, and it was Smith who suggested a leave of absence to the commander, following the loss of the seaWolf. Smith transferred off the Yorktown shortly before Barratts return, taking up a position at UEO Operations, Pearl Harbour.

Smith was placed on the shortlist for the Excalibur by his friend and former CO, who suggested that Smiths familiarity with Macronesian comm protocols and frequencies would be a vital asset to the flagship. Smith accepted the assignment, and was pleased that he would be once again serving under Barratt. However, Barratts attitude towards Captain Warren on the maiden voyage found Smith torn between loyalty to his friend and his position as second officer. Luckily, the situation was resolved easily, and Smith settled into his new post with few problems. His skills helped track down and capture the Macronesian saboteur onboard Excalibur, as well as discover the Macronesian cruiser shadowing the sub.

Personal:
Smith had a fairly torturous childhood, suffering an intense period of bullying during high school, and the insecurities that resulted from this followed him into his early career. He has been estranged from his mother for several years, following his decision to join the UEO Navy.

His skills with languages became apparent from an early age. As his mother was a successful author, book-signing tours abroad became a routine part of young Daniels life. He picked up languages fairly easily, and by the age of 15, could speak fluent French, German and Mandarin Chinese. He also became a firm enthusiast of ham radio, communicating with people across the globe. These two interests combined to help him in his UEO career.
