Yes, some of you may wonder why the 'pilot' episode is not out before the series proper. Well, it's basically because, originally, "Dawning" was supposed to be the first episode. But, as I began to develop the history of the characters, I realised that we really needed to see them right back at the beginning, meeting for the first time, animosities, and developing relationships.

"Arrivals" is that first meeting. Think of it as the seaWolf equivalent of the "In The Beginning" Babylon 5 TV movie.

(SPOILER ALERT!)*************(SPOILER ALERT!)*************(SPOILER ALERT!)

We see the formation of the crew, and gain insights into their characters that we never realised were there, for example, Barratts initial hostility towards Warren, and the gradual acceptance of Warrens skills and abilities. I wanted to introduce this conflict in the series itself, but felt with the other storylines being written for the first few episodes, it wouldnt have gotten the screen time needed to fully develop it. Some may argue that Barratts attitude changes much too quickly, but I felt that was part of his character: accepting, willing to have his ideas challenged. The idea that Barratt was up for consideration as Captain of the Excalibur recurs in the third season episode Roads Not Taken, and adds a surprising twist

Other ideas we see here include the initial steps towards Warren and Taylors relationship, and we can see the instant attraction between the pair in the brief scenes they have together. We see the firmly established friendships between Stamp and Warren, Barratt and Smith, and Clark and Parker, which continue into the series. We also get tantalising glimpses into future developments in the series, hidden in dialogue or brief snatches of images, such as the plans for the seaFire on McGaths desk at Pearl Point, and Bournes references to the build-up to the attack on Pearl Harbour in Dawning and the Archangel

It's a very strong story, still in the depths of Writer's Block Hell, but it's getting there.
