summer's song
snacks discarded
from overstuffed sandchairs
a gull's feast

*moments. June, 2002
crab buries itself
rough surf uncovers him
again and again

*Oceana, Summer, 2002
offshore breeze
the sun tucks
into the horizon
sandpiper
tiny wave hopper
plays alone
connected eye to eye
in the midway crowd you wink
my heart is safe
tumbling
double sunrise shell
survives the storm

chain link fence
trapping summer's goddesses
roses bloom rampant
sleeping fog
lazy and  slow
until summer sun woke me
between 18 holes
dew dropped hills
grow morning mist
wilting unnoticed
dwarfed by rose blossoms
a single blade
my back in the sand
clouds chase each other
out to sea

sky blackens seaward
pulling the wind with it
~a door slams
reflected in the sea
Draco* stands on his head
entertaining the guests

roses
whiter in the rain
light the garden walk
summer sun
he pulls splinters
from his toe
gulls greet
the neighbor's roof
way too early

*moments, June, 2002
ignoring
the fork in the road
summer breeze

my first tanka

September second
a lone surfer in the swells
singing Springsteen
"no retreat, baby,
no surrender"
summer romance
Mars slides a bit
closer to Earth
lightening strikes
my neighbors across the bay
in total darkness

making love
no mood music
no tv
sunrise~
still in today's roses
yesterday's rain
another summer storm
the rut in the driveway
grows deeper
kite flying~
the beat of her heart
in his head
all through
the summer night's breeze
windchimes
summer
the purple martins return
to the birdhouse

dusk
the purple martins
sing
