Available Service Placements
(The following lists some available positions. If you have another idea, let us know! It is possible to create new positions where theres desire and need. Other departments include dental, substance abuse, and home health care.)
Member may serve with mental health department in various capacities, including assisting case managers. Member will learn about mental health issues with under-served populations from the "front lines", where case managers not only deal with the therapy needs of each client, but also with issues of medication, lack of food /shelter and health insurance, and unemployment. Seeing the client as a whole person, member may do initial client intakes, assist in dealings with DSHS, and do Basic Health Plan enrollment. Other projects include updating a resource book and possibly gaining certification as a Licensed Counselor in Washington State. Spanish speaking preferred.
Seeking applicant who loves to be with children (2 months to 12 years) and is creative. Member will create fun after-school activities for children (music, arts & crafts, story-time, drama), assist teachers, and provide general childcare. Member may also help coordinate Intergenerational Program, which encourages meaningful interaction between Nursing Home residents and children based on Latin American, family-centered model.
Assist with case management and home visits for both programs. 1) Welfare To Work program helps people overcome barriers (criminal record, housing, lack of training) to get off welfare and find employment. Program helps client find employment, then educational training, and continues to follow-up on client. 2) WIA is a newly funded initiative, run by PACE (a conglomeration of 4 social service agencies). To qualify, clients income must be 175% below the poverty line, and client must have a barrier (mental health, non-English speaking, etc.) Program trains client to meet a specific employers needs, and Sea Mar pays for vocational training. Sea Mar continues to re-train client and place him/her with better jobs until income is high enough to support his/her family. Member will assist in screening, interviewing, and job placement. May also help establish a network list of employers and service programs. Must be bilingual-Spanish; preferred with vehicle.
Member will coordinate Reach Out And Read, a pediatric literacy program where providers use the Well-Child Check to encourage early reading to stimulate childs development. Provider then gives the gift of one book; by the start of school, a child will already have a small library. Position includes training providers, coordinating volunteer readers for the waiting room, re-ordering books, and seeking new book donation opportunities. Member may also oversee extension programs in northern and southern clinics. For those interested in medicine, member may shadow doctors, nurses, residents, and possibly pharmacist, to gain hands-on clinical experience. Possible project: participate in pilot Tuberculosis Testing Program; includes creating new computer tracking system and doing follow-up calls to clients.
Basic Health Plan is the state-funded, low-income health insurance plan. Two positions are available: one Member will work with SEA MAR Managed Care Department to identify new Seattle clinic patients without health insurance and enroll them in BHP. Seattle clinic receives 24 walk-ins a day; member will target this population so patients may make a second appointment without fear, and regardless of citizenship status. Member will have total client contact through outreach work. Position involves working with the client to problem solve and search out all available options. Bilingual preferred.
Second member will serve at nearby non-profit El Centro de la Raza, doing a larger-scale BHP and CHIP (Child Health Insurance Plan) outreach and enrollment campaign. At El Centro, outreach work will be more independent with the ability to truly create ones own outreach program. This includes advertising BHP/CHIP program in local businesses, schools and day-care facilities, and in the media. May also educate at parent meetings, ESL and citizenship classes with an eye to enroll maximum # of people. Member must be bilingual-Spanish.
This program aims to connect seniors, who are living independently in the community, with supportive services such as translation, transportation, medical coupons, and medical services. It is an active program that also works with the Nutrition Socialization Program (aim: to develop a new social group for seniors and get them out of isolation). Member will transport clients when necessary, do follow-up phone calls to maintain contact with clients, and track encounters. Spanish speaking preferred.
7) Nursing Home, Seattle: Activities/Recreational Therapy Assistant (Placement Filled)
Member will serve in Nursing Home and Alzheimers Unit. Will assist the Activities and Recreational Therapy Departments with resident activities (intended to stimulate, maintain, and heal) including stimulation massages, reading aloud, music, Bible study groups, volleyball, etc. May also participate in coordinating Intergenerational Program, which encourages meaningful interaction between children of Child Development Center and Nursing Home residents, based on Latin American, family-centered model.
8) All SEA MAR, Seattle: Volunteer Program Coordinator (Placement Filled)
Member will coordinate a volunteer program within SEA MAR involving outreach to and recruitment from various communities. Member will interview, make placements, oversee scheduling, and possibly coordinate ongoing trainings/projects. Seeking someone who enjoys seeing the bigger picture of agency needs and wants to learn about community networking.
9) Health Education, Seattle and Tacoma: Health Education Assistant (Placement Filled)
Member will assist Health Educator with Diabetes outreach within Latino community and with HIV/AIDS prevention work in the public schools. Diabetes program functions off the REACH grant, and outreaches to Latino men and women in South Park, organizes Diabetes Days for foot and eye exams, and tracks patient commitment to self-care. HIV/AIDS component educates on prevention and health maintenance techniques, and may include facilitating CDC sponsored prevention training. Bilingual preferred.
10) Medical Clinic, Smokey Point/Marysville: Literacy Coordinator/OB Nurses Aid
As with the Seattle Medical Clinic, Member will coordinate the Reach Out and Read pediatric literacy program (see description). Member may also work with OB nurses in the Preventative Health Services Program. This is an educational program that educates clients about nutrition, infant health, and breastfeeding through home visits. Member will assist nurses with outreach though home visits, and assist in case management. Member may also manage initial client contacts through front desk assistance. Linguistic flexibility preferred.
11) Mental Health Clinic, Everett: Case Management Assistant
Similar to Mental Health placement in Seattle, Member will provide services to Everett mental health patients, including case management and advocacy, translation, transportation, and assistance with DSHS and BHP enrollment. Service may also include participation in ESL/citizenship classes. Everett facility serves Spanish, English, and Russian speaking clients primarily.
