| Family: Serranidae Scientific name: Epinephelus tauving (Forsskal) Local name: Kerapu, Kertang, Pertang Distribution: Shallow coastal waters to about 60m depth Size commonly caught: 30-70cm total length Notes: A large fish with elongate and thick-set body. Body ground colour light brown with darker vertical or oblique bands. Upper body, head and base of pectoral fins have red/brown spots. Several species have been locally with very similar morphometric characters except for difrences in the size of the spots. An economically high-value species and a popular fish for local restaurant cuisine. Also a popular species for cage mariculture. |
