What
is SEAHEC?
The Southeast Arizona Area Health Education Center (SEAHEC) has provided
continuous service to the counties of Cochise, Pima, and Santa Cruz along
the Mexico border region of Arizona since its inception in 1984. This
was the first center to be established by the Arizona AHEC System through
a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Health Professions, Health
Resources and Services Administration of the Department of Health and
Human Services (DHHS). This AHEC focuses on the unique health service
and public health needs of this border region. The scope of work during
this last year has been largely directed toward the recruitment and retention
of health professionals and health professions students in its underserved
communities. Because these communities are largely Hispanic or Native
American, this work stresses the importance of cross-cultural and cross-lingual
experiences. It also places priority on creating new opportunities for
career and personal enhancement among the health professionals in these
communities; motivating young people to continue their education in preparation
for service to their communities; and providing models of multidisciplinary,
interdisciplinary, and community-oriented primary care education for health
profession students.
SEAHEC
is one of five Area Health Education Centers in Arizona. SEAHEC Provides
services to the residents of Pima, Santa Cruz, and Cochise counties. As
an Area Health Education Center, the mission of SEAHEC is to improve the
development, recruitment, minority representation, distribution, and retention
of health professional personnel in Arizona's rural and medically underserved
communities. Through community and academic partnerships, SEAHEC delivers
educational programs and services created to address the shortage of health
care personnel and lack of health care resources available in our rural
communities.
How
can SEAHEC help me?
SEAHEC offers programs and resources for students who are interested in
becoming health professionals. SEAHEC offers two programs in which students
can participate in, through the SEAHEC Health Careers Club and the Southern
Arizona Border- Health Careers Opportunity Program (SAB-HCOP). These programs
are aimed at promoting health careers in minority populations and in bridging
higher education with our rural communities. This program provides college
and high school mentoring and tutoring, scholarship and financial aid
information, health career fairs, SAT and ACT test preparation, computer
skills and other educational seminars and workshops. SEAHEC Health Careers
Club and SAB-HCOP also offers fun club activities and site visits that
develop leadership skills, enhance motivation and empower students to
learn.
Furthermore,
SEAHEC Health Careers Club and SAB-HCOP will promote summer enrichment
programs at the high schools, Pima Community College, Cochise Community
College and the University of Arizona. These summer programs will allow
students to become familiar with both high school and college environments
as well as give "hands on" experience learning about health
professions.
