The Olympic Puggley Club of America was organized to develop and

improve the rare and new breed of Puggleys’.

The following is the historical events of the Puggley’ beginning.

A compassionate animal lover Reta Gosk, from Port Townsend in the NW corner of Washington State, started this popular mixed breed. She had a special fondness for small terrier like breeds.

After the loss of her dog Boots, a terrier mix, Reta was greatly influenced by the plight of two tiny puppies. Their mother, a black Chinese Pug, died at their birth. The father, a Boston, couldn’t help in the raising of them. So…they were delivered to the hands of the local Humane Society.

Reta took the pair of orphaned puppies home with her and named them Maggie and Jiggs. They slept with her in a box in her own bed. She fed them with eyedroppers every four hours round the clock till they could eat on their own. Reta once said they were so small and weak that Jiggs sprained his shoulder while trying to drink from a saucer.

Jiggs, was a lively, puged nosed, black & white bundle of mischief. His tail curled into a tight coil above his back. His broad chest and narrow hips were hard as steel. He was about 15 inches at the shoulders. His tenacious territorial behavior got him into plenty of trouble for such a small pup. He even took on the neighbors “Pit Bull”, a couple times. The Terrier quickness is probably the only reason he escaped death. His short smooth coat certainly did not provide him with much protection from the jaws of this brute 4 times his size.

Maggie, much milder mannered with a very sweet disposition, was also black. Her tail was not long enough to curl also her legs a bit shorter. Longer in body, muzzle and coat than her brother, but not by much. Each had small dropped ears. She was to become the mother of the main core of a “New” developing breed, which was to become known as the “Puggley”

Buttons, a Boston, was introduced into the breed as an outcross to reduce the line breeding problems that might occur in the development of a new breed. The pedigree in this pamphlet, as you can see, is the foundation of the Puggley’

Reta’s daughter, Roberta, fell in love with this small, easy to maintain breed. After Reta’s death, Roberta took over the breeding and developing of this new strain of dog.

An Aunt by marriage, Joyce Flint a purebred dog breeder herself, encouraged the continuation of this new breed. She established the present name “The American Puggley”.

Dog Registry of America (DRA) recognizes the Puggley’s as a Developing Breed and can be shown as such under DRA at the present time.
