Poway Invitational
Mariners take it on
the chin from Granite, 21-5
Posted Sept. 19, 2002
Mar Vista High’s water polo team drew a big and physical Granite Hills team in
the first round of this year’s Poway Invitational and lost big again to fall to
0-2 on the season. The scoreboard against the Eagles read 21-5 -- following a
19-6 non-league loss Sept. 11 to Ramona.
“We are still learning,” said Mariners coach Chip Case. “The scoreboard read
21-5, but the boys learned some defensive lessons.”
Mar Vista scored twice in the first period on goals by Joe and Julian Czerwiec.
Joe Czerwiec’s goal was from the two-meter position and opened the scoring in
the game. In the second period, Shawn Johnson threw one in from the weak side
wing. Brandon Keshka scored his first goals of the year from the outside.
First-year senior Sean Gill got inside water and scored his first goals in the
fourth period as well. Despite the the onslaught of 21 goals that got past
Mariners goalie Eric Grieble, he did manage some spectacular saves when we
needed. Grieble finished the game with 10 saves -- five of them in the fourth
period.
Mar Vista plays Mt. Miguel Friday, Sept. 20, at 3 p.m. at Montgomery Middle
School pool. The Matadors fell to 0-1 in tournament play following a lopsided
loss to Carlsbad.
