Midway Baptist Patriots start anew

By Phillip Brents

Posted Sept. 7, 2002

Midway Baptist is returning to 11-man play with a freelance schedule this season. All games will be played on the road. Opponents include Sage Hill, Calipatria, Mountain Empire, Twin Pines, Francis Parker, Bishop’s, Lavern Lutheran, Linfield, Army-Navy Academy and Horizon.

Francis Parker, Bishop’s, Army-Navy , Horizon and Mountain Empire are all well entrenched programs at the San Diego Section Division IV level. The Patriots  get a chance to reacquaint themselves with several familiar foes in Coastal Conference members Bishop’s, Horizon, Army-Navy and Francis Parker. The schedule appears challenging, as Horizon (6-5), Bishop’s (6-6), Francis Parker (5-5) and Army-Navy (4-6) all compiled strong records last year.

The school may be the smallest to field CIF sports in the South Bay but Midway Baptist athletes have produced big rewards, winning the 1994 San Diego Section 1A 8-man title and earning a share of the 1998 Citrus League championship..

“We have a young team this year but our expectation is to make the Division IV CF playoffs,” said coach Jerry Webb, who is entering this 21st year at the helm.

Top returners include junior running back/linebacker Isaiah Warner (700 yards last year, 93 points) and wide receiver/defensive back Anthony Medina to lead the offense and senior linebacker Zeth Oats and senior guard/defensive lineman Ryan Hanson to help provide leadership on defense.

The team’s impact newcomers primarily bolster the offense — a facet for which Midway Baptist is well known. The Patriots regularly lit up the scoreboard in eight-man play, averaging 41.8 points per game last year.

Sophomore Mathew Turner should see action at the running back/linebacker position while junior John Carr and freshman Jose Pacheco are both vying for the quarterback job.
