Metro Conference game previews: 9/27
League title no longer on line but rivalry continues for unbeaten Castle Park,
Eastlake football teams
By Phillip Brents
Posted Sept. 26, 2002
This game proved to be for inaugural South Bay League championship two seasons
ago, but this year, following Eastlake’s move to the Mesa League, the matchup
counts for nothing but bragging rights — and a 3-0 record for the winner.
Both teams have gotten out of the chute with strong offensive performances.
Castle Park has put up 34 and 43 points in winning its two games; Eastlake has
also been consistent by racking up winning margins of 29-6 (in the season opener
against San Marcos) and 26-8 (last week against Hilltop). After allowing just
seven points to seventh-ranked Torrey Pines in its opener, Castle Park gave up
34 points to Montgomery last week in winning a wild scoringfest.
“I think we’re evenly matched up,” said Eastlake coach John McFadden. “Our
offense has been strong. Our defense has been strong. Their offense and defense
look very strong.”
DeMarco Sampson, who was selected the San Diego Riptide’s Ironman of the Week
for his scintillating performance in the Trojans’ season opening win, went right
back to work against the Aztecs by scoring three touchdowns, including
electrifying scores on a 96-yard punt return and 80-yard kickoff return, while
collecting 33 yards in total offense. He also scored on a three-yard run. Senior
quarterback Chase McGuire threw one touchdown pass (a 10-yarder to Freddle
Dunkle) and ran for another (three yards). Castle Park scratched back from
deficits of 20-14 and 26-20 in the fourth quarter with a run of four unanswered
touchdowns to lead 43-26.
In two games, McGuire has thrown for 294 yards with three touchdowns. He is
averaging 147 yards per game on a 58.6 percent completion percentage. Dunkle
leads the CP receiving corps with 10 catches for 191 yards and one touchdown.
The Trojans rank second among Metro Conference teams in point scoring offense
with 38.5 points per game, trailing Marian Catholic’s conference leading average
of 43.0 points per game.
After missing the Titans’ season opener, Mark Whaley (13 rushes, 212 yards)
returned to action with three touchdowns against the Lancers, scoring on runs of
nine, 65 and 34 yards. Whaley’s 212.0 game average leads the San Diego Section.
Julio DeUnamuno (43 passing yards, 33 rushing yards) got his first touchdown of
the year on a one-yard run in the game against Hilltop. Eastlake scored the
game’s final 26 points after the Lancers scored the first eight points of the
contest.
The Titans rushed for 318 yards and added 120 passing yards in their opener and
came back with 398 yards in total offense (including 312 rushing yards) against
Hilltop. Emmanuel Ley keys the Eastlake defense with 22 tackles in two games. He
had 10 tackles (five solo hits) last week. Hilltop generated 121 total offensive
yards — 92 yards on the ground against the Titans.
Crusaders move to 3-0
Marian Catholic became the first Metro Conference team to roll to a 3-0 record
following its 48-13 non-league victory last Friday against visiting Sweetwater.
Marian Catholic scored five touchdowns in the first quarter and led 41-0 at
halftime. Eugene Alaniz (10 rushes, 159 yards) scored three touchdowns while
Patrick Gates (eight rushes, 113 yards) scored once. Quarterback Mario Ledesma
(111 passing yards) threw one touchdown pass while rushing for another. Marco
Contreras (four rushes, 55 yards) also had touchdown out of the backfield. The
Crusaders have a bye this week.
Montgomery (1-1) at Hilltop (0-2), 7 p.m.
Sophomore quarterback Josh Osuna keyed the Aztecs in their 43-34 loss at Castle
Park by completing 18 of 34 passes for 298 yards with three touchdowns while
rushing for an additional 50 yards and one touchdown. Bernell Swinson (57
yards), Kenyatta Williams (34 yards) and Eric Stinton (13 yards) all caught
scoring passes.
B.J. Hunt spotted the Lancers with the lead last week against Eastlake by
connecting on a six-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Roberson. However, Hilltop was
outgained 398-121 in total offensive yards in absorbing a 26-8 loss. In two
games, the Lancers have been outscored 67-8. To counter that, the Lancers
employed a ball possession offense against the Titans, holding onto possession
for long periods of time in stretches but falling short in putting points on the
scoreboard.
Mar Vista (0-1-1) at Sweetwater
(0-2), 7 p.m.
Both teams have yet to debut in the win column this year. Both teams are coming
off lopsided losses — Mar Vista 45-0 to visiting Las Vegas Centennial and
Sweetwater 48-13 against host Marian Catholic. Evin Groves rushed 28 times for
230 yards and one touchdown while Ozzie Simental caught two passes for 32 yards
and one touchdown for Sweetwater.
Southwest (0-1-1) vs. Bonita Vista (1-1) at
Southwestern College, 7 p.m.
The Barons subdued Las Vegas Silverado 54-0 last week as Alex Ghebrasalassie
scored three touchdowns (including one on a 75-yard punt return) and sophomore
quarterback Rowdy Arciaga (11-for-20, 232 yards) passed for four scores. Troy
Sherry and Taka Gordon, both of whom tacked on 83 yards, also scored touchdowns
for the Barons, who led 40-0 at halftime.
After producing 20 points in their season opener, the Raiders’ offense was shut
down in a 48-7 loss last week to visiting Chula Vista. The lone Southwest score
came on a 23-yard fumble return by Dominick Young.
Silverado (Las Vegas) at Chula Vista (1-1), 7
p.m.
The Spartans broke out with 48 points to end the Raiders’ brief one-game
unbeaten streak in a 48-7 rout last week. Kevin Davies, who missed Chula Vista’s
21-11 non-league loss at Valhalla, scored three touchdowns in his season debut
while Romero Crawford added two scores. Travis Crawford (7-for-8, 108 yards)
threw one touchdown pass to Dorian Long. Davies rushed for 141 yards on 21
carries while place-kicker Ricky Alvarado contributed field goals of 25 and 22
yards. The Spartans outgained Southwest 289-151 in total offensive yards,
compiling 20 first downs.
Midway Baptist (1-1) at Mt. Empire (0-2),
7:30 p.m.
Mathew Turner (305 all-purpose yards) scored touchdowns on runs of 15 and 85
yards as the Patriots paraded out their high octane offense of yesteryear in a
37-36 win last Friday at Calipatria. Isaiah Warner, who had two touchdowns in a
season-opening loss at Sage Hill, scored on a two-yard run. John Carr and Zeth
Oats also scored touchdowns for Midway Baptist, which built a 29-18 halftime
lead. Turner stopped Calipatria’s two-point conversion attempt to win the game.
